The Head of Process Engineering is a pivotal role responsible for spearheading and managing the onsite engineering team at Chobani's production facility. This position demands a high level of accountability, leadership, and independent decision-making. The individual will oversee the entire design process, from the initial conceptual phase of project development to execution and project completion. This role will evaluate vendors for their competencies and capabilities, negotiate bid documents, and ensure accountability for project development and execution, including the performance of process systems. Additionally, this position will ensure timely support for daily manufacturing operations, encompassing troubleshooting, optimization, and waste reduction initiatives. The individual will also be responsible for maintaining both food safety and quality standards for Chobani products.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise to support processing, utilities, and wastewater systems
- Develop strategies to enhance process efficiencies while reducing costs, improving yields, quality, and safety
- Diagnose process issues and identify root causes to resolve challenges
- Coordinate process control in conjunction with automation
- Create conceptual engineering designs and layouts for process equipment
- Generate documentation to support process modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and process descriptions
- Specify required equipment and collaborate with vendors and contractors to achieve project goals
- Lead and engage in process risk assessments, automation simulations, and project-related FMEAs
- Oversee the creation of intervention, LOTO, and flush plans
- Ensure asset tags are integrated into WW Historian and that automated reporting functions correctly
- Determine the configuration of piping, equipment, and utilities for engineering modifications
- Collaborate closely with the Project Management team to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery
- Conduct research on engineering topics, prepare studies, and execute trials with production
- Assist in transitioning capital projects to the production team
- Maintain a comprehensive documentation library in coordination with the drafting team (including Equipment Layouts, Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, Equipment Manuals, Standards, etc.)
- Solicit and evaluate all proposed process changes, submittals, and designs through a Management of Change process
- Review relevant agency regulations and provide guidance to operations, maintenance, and project managers
- Adhere to Chobani's safety protocols and Good Manufacturing Practices
- Engage in other exciting opportunities as assigned
- Experience in the dairy or food manufacturing sector with extensive process knowledge; experience with cultured dairy products is advantageous
- 3-5 years of experience at the director level leading a technical team
- 10-15 years of experience in capital projects or plant manufacturing
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Familiarity with HACCP, food safety, and related compliance regulations; PMO experience is a plus
- Understanding of PLC and logic controls for high-speed operating equipment
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to collaborate, create a shared vision, inspire others, challenge the status quo, and drive change
- Willingness to serve as a working manager and provide technical support to the process engineering team as needed
- Demonstrated ability to effectively develop team members and share knowledge
- Strong capability to manage multiple tasks under time constraints and ensure thorough execution
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels
- Proven experience in strategic planning, project management, and team leadership
- Demonstrated success in driving process improvements, cost savings, and operational efficiencies
