Job Purpose
A Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for safeguarding individuals and property while effectively minimizing criminal activities, ensuring that all interactions are conducted with respect and dignity. This role encompasses the enforcement of various laws at the Tribal, State, and Federal levels, alongside fostering community relationships through education and communication.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responds to a variety of emergency situations, often involving high-stress and unpredictable circumstances.
  • Conducts patrols in designated areas to identify, investigate, and prevent criminal behavior.
  • Implements and upholds Tribal, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
  • Handles radio and telephone inquiries for public assistance.
  • Secures crime scenes and meticulously collects, preserves, and documents evidence.
  • Investigates incidents, prepares detailed reports, and interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Executes arrests, issues citations, and processes legal documents as necessary.
  • Delivers warnings, subpoenas, and other legal notices to individuals.
  • Appears in court as required, both during and outside of duty hours.
  • Engages in Community Oriented Policing initiatives and supports community programs.
  • Reports any hazardous conditions that may pose risks to the Tribe.
  • Participates in ongoing training to maintain skills and comply with BIA and AZ POST requirements.
  • Performs additional tasks as assigned by a Supervisor or Tribal Council.
Qualifications
Education - Required
  • High school diploma or GED is preferred.
Specialized Knowledge - Preferred
  • Understanding of modern law enforcement practices and methods.
  • Familiarity with problem-oriented policing strategies.
Skills - Preferred
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Proficient in the use of firearms.
  • Skilled in evidence collection techniques.
Abilities - Required
  • Must possess or be able to obtain an Arizona Driver's License prior to employment and be insurable under the Tribe's auto insurance.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, which may include written and oral examinations, physical agility tests, polygraph, and psychological evaluations.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
Other Characteristics
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and awareness.
  • Physical demands include walking, running, lifting, and climbing to apprehend or control individuals.
Professional Certification
  • Must acquire or maintain AZ POST and BIA certifications.
Experience
  • AZ POST certification is preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; exceptions apply for academy attendance if the individual will turn 21 before graduation.
Working Conditions
  • Must be available for various shifts to support a 24/7 operational environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be flexible to adjust schedules as needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Job entails physical activities such as walking, running, lifting, and climbing in response to emergencies.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous and life-threatening situations is inherent to the role, requiring readiness to respond in all weather conditions.
Direct Reports
  • An Officer will not supervise others unless designated as a Field Training Officer or Lead Officer.
