Job purpose
A Police Officer provides police protection of life and property, and reduces crime while treating everyone with dignity and respect.  These duties are achieved through investigation into and enforcement of Tribal, State, and Federal laws as well as education, communication, and partnership with the community

Duties and responsibilities
  • Performs duties effectively on a routine basis where at any time the Officer may need to respond to calls involving stressful traumatic, dangerous, and unpredictable situations.
  • Patrols assigned area to detect, investigation, and stop criminal activity.
  • Enforce Tribal, State and Federal ordinances and laws.
  •  Respond to Radio and Telephone requests for assistance for the public
  • Secure crime scenes, collects, preserves and photographs evidence.
  • Investigate calls for service and prepares reports.  This included interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Makes arrest, issues citations, requests charging, obtains criminal complaints, requests and serve warrants.
  • Serves warnings, subpoenas, warrants of arrest and court orders, and  Council community notices
  • Appears in court bothon and off duty
  • Participates in Community Oriented Policing and other community programsassists with medical attention.
  • Reports conditions that may be hazardous or libelous to the Tribe.
  • Participates in training programs to maintain skills and meet BIA and AZ POST annual requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Tribal Council.
Qualifications
  Education - Required
  • Prefer high school diploma or GED
Specialized Knowledge - Preferred
  • Principles and practices of modern police work and law enforcement methods.
  • Problem oriented policing methods.
Skills- Preferred
  • Competent in communication skills.
  • Proficient in weapons
  • Proficient in evidence collection
Abilities - Required
  • Have or be able to obtain an Arizona Drivers License prior to employment and be insurable under the Tonto Apache Tribe's auto insurance carrier.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation whish may include a written and oral exam, physical agility test, polygraph, and psychological exam.
  • Pass a drug test
Other characteristics such as personal characteristics
  • Must be able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Work requires walking, running ,lifting, and climbing during effort to catch or subdue hostile individuals,
Professional Certification
  • Must be able to acquire or maintain an AZ POST and BIA certification experience.
Experience
  • AZ POST certified preferred
Special Requirements:
  • Be at least 21 years of age; exception - that a person may attend an academy if the person will be 21 before graduating.
Working Conditions
  • Work any assignment, or shift to support the 24-hour per day, 7 -day week operation.  This includes nights, weekends, and holidays, and when the need arises; adjust their schedule to accomplish a mission or operational needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Work requires walking, running, lifting, and climbing during efforts to catch or subdue hostile individuals.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous uncontrollable and life threatening situations.  Officers may need to respond to calls involving stressful traumatic, dangerous, and unpredictable situations.  Work is performed in all weather conditions.
Direct reports
  • An Officer will not supervise others unless they are designated as a field Training Officer or Lead Officer.
