Position Title: Category One Law Enforcement Officer

Summary of Overall Purpose of Position: Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, Police Lieutenant, or watch commander, this role is essential in maintaining public peace and safety through a range of law enforcement responsibilities. The officer will enforce local and state regulations while ensuring effective communication both verbally and in writing. The ability to document incidents in a clear, professional manner is crucial. Proficiency in utilizing both lethal and non-lethal weapons in accordance with departmental protocols is required. Regular patrols of city neighborhoods are part of the routine duties.

Essential Duties:
1. Engage with local businesses and community members to identify and address concerns.
2. Provide reassurance and a sense of security to the community.
3. Enforce local and state laws, including traffic regulations.
4. Operate a police vehicle in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to departmental policies.
5. Respond to urgent calls involving threats to life and property, such as robbery, burglary, and disturbances.
6. Conduct investigations and follow-up inquiries as necessary.
7. Address calls for service within the community.

Marginal Duties:
1. Appear in court as required.
2. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Minimum age of 21 years.
3. No convictions related to controlled substances or serious crimes in the past five years.
4. Typing speed of at least 30 words per minute is necessary.
Certificates/Licenses:
1. Valid driver's license is required.
2. Must possess and maintain certification as mandated by the state.
3. Compliance with annual mandatory certifications is essential.

Knowledge:
1. Understanding of criminal and traffic laws.
2. Proficient in verbal and written communication principles.
3. Familiarity with self-defense ethics, city geography, and modern law enforcement techniques.

Skills:
1. Proficient in the use of firearms and police equipment.
2. Ability to operate emergency vehicles and other law enforcement tools.

Communication Skills:
1. Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
2. Establish positive working relationships with colleagues and the public.
3. Ability to manage and de-escalate tense situations.

Physical Demands:
Duties require moderate to heavy physical exertion, including running, climbing, and lifting up to 150 pounds. The role involves prolonged periods of sitting and standing, with constant visual and auditory alertness.

Working Conditions:
This position may involve exposure to stressful situations, hazardous conditions, and varying weather. The noise level is typically moderate, and the officer must work independently with minimal supervision, adapting to diverse environmental challenges.
