About this role:
GM Financial is seeking a Cloud Systems Engineer to provide technical, administrative, and developmental support for our SAS Viya platform as we advance our cloud journey.
This role will ensure that the SAS environment, along with its security infrastructure, aligns with both tactical and strategic initiatives.
The Senior Cloud Solutions Engineer will translate cloud strategies and architectures into secure and highly available technical implementations, adhering to industry best practices.
This position also involves continuous monitoring and optimization of cloud implementations for technical and cost efficiencies, as well as ongoing collaboration with other teams and projects, particularly in DevOps, platform, and automation.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and guide the design and development of the SAS platform on Azure.
Engage in platform management, including roadmaps, best practices, and design.
Automate cloud environment provisioning through pipeline engineering using tools like Terraform, Chef, and Puppet.
Research, analyze, design, develop, and support high-quality automation workflows that align with business and technology strategies.
Collaborate with teams to strategize, consult, and prototype best practices and solutions for applications utilizing CI/CD and cloud technologies.
Promote Distributed Version Control and Trunk-Based Development practices, as well as ATDD and TDD methodologies.
Conduct proof of concepts and technical feasibility studies for business requirements.
Stay updated on emerging technologies and architectures, proposing innovative applications in current and future projects.
Troubleshoot production issues, engage relevant parties, and drive resolutions.
Manage processes for third-party data streams into the data center and cloud.
Work with Architecture teams to advise on enabling work and make decisions regarding sequencing for optimal value delivery to business customers.
Ensure high availability and 24/7 monitoring of systems.
Continuously improve operational processes and procedures.
Educate and guide team members on cloud standards, acting as a Subject Matter Expert for all cloud-related technical inquiries, with a focus on Azure and Cloud Native development.
Lead the creation of compliance automation and policy-as-code to enhance cloud governance.
Strive to deliver exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients.
Effectively communicate project health, risks, and issues to stakeholders and management teams.
Independently resolve conflicts between timelines, budgets, and scope, while escalating complex issues to senior management as needed.
Identify and direct changes through appropriate review and approval processes.

Knowledge
In-depth understanding of
Hybrid Cloud Computing:
Virtualization technologies, Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service delivery models, along with the current competitive landscape.
Extensive experience with cloud technologies (such as Azure, AWS, GCP) and native toolsets like Azure ARM Templates, Hashicorp Terraform, and AWS Cloud Formation.
Practical experience with Azure and/or AWS cloud services, including Event Hubs, VMs, Kubernetes, Storage, DNS, Networking, Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Elastic Kubernetes Services (EKS), S3/Blob Storage, Azure DNS, Virtual Networks, Redis Cache, and Azure App Services.
Pipeline Automation:
Experience with Azure DevOps, Terraform, Jenkins, Chef, Octopus Deploy, or similar tools.
Experience in designing, building, and optimizing automated pipelines with integrated testing and security controls.
Strong background in Windows and/or Linux operating systems.
Experience with Containers (Docker/OCI).
Solid background in cloud instrumentation and monitoring of distributed architectures using tools like Splunk, Nagios, or similar.
Familiarity with source control management systems (GIT or Subversion), build systems (Maven, Gradle, Webpack), code quality tools (Sonarqube), artifact repository managers (Artifactory), and CI/CD (Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
Exceptional critical thinking and communication skills, with a commitment to using documentation as a tool for continuous improvement.
Proficiency in scripting and automation using languages such as Python and Bash.
Experience with database technologies (one or more of the following): Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Postgres.
Strong knowledge of Web Services, API Gateways, and application integration development and design.
Working knowledge of Agile development, Scrum, and Application Lifecycle Management.

Proven ability to provide architectural design, leadership, management, and mentorship to team members.
Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and driven.
Ability to create system and process flow diagrams, data flow diagrams, sequence and UML diagrams, and understand inter and intra-system dependencies.
Defines and promotes best practices; fosters a culture of innovation and learning, including willingness to instruct and coach in a cloud training program as needed.
Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to design high-availability systems with fault tolerance, disaster recovery, and multi-region solutions to ensure business continuity.
Experience in designing scalable, secure, and robust cloud architectures with a successful track record in Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.
Experience and Education
7-10 years of experience in an IT environment or relevant role required.
5-7 years of cloud development and support experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) required.
2-3 years of experience in the consumer banking industry preferred.
Previous knowledge of SAS is beneficial but not required.
Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent work or military experience required.
