S&ME, Inc. is in search of a motivated and committed full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technician to become part of our Construction Services division.


Role Responsibilities:

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you will be part of a team that prioritizes safety, integrity, and professional development. This position primarily involves outdoor activities, providing the excitement of witnessing construction projects evolve and knowing you contribute to their success.

Testing Duties: Conduct tests on soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt with minimal supervision from seasoned technicians and professionals.

Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all equipment is kept clean and operational. Regularly maintain and calibrate testing instruments.

Reporting Procedures: Document testing outcomes with minimal oversight. Report inspection findings under the guidance of experienced personnel.

Interpretation of Plans: Analyze plans and specifications to determine testing schedules and acceptable result ranges with occasional supervision.

Inspection Tasks: Carry out inspections related to building codes, based on certifications obtained, under the close supervision of experienced technicians and professionals.


Candidate Profile:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Vocational training is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials is necessary.
  • Possession of two or more active certifications is required, including:
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
    • DOT Certifications in Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) in English are essential.
  • Basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and measurement units are necessary.
  • Ability to proficiently enter data into various software applications on smart devices, including Microsoft Office and email.

Physical Requirements:

Willingness and ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including:

  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Walking on rough and uneven surfaces.
  • Standing for up to 8 hours a day, occasionally up to 12 hours.
  • Lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs regularly (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Safely maneuvering field equipment, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven terrain and around active construction sites.
  • Traveling for assignments as needed.
  • Working outside of standard business hours when required.
