Position Summary:
The Coding Specialist I embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols. This role is essential in ensuring accurate coding practices and maintaining high standards of documentation.

The Coding Specialist in Gastroenterology is responsible for coding and abstracting gastrointestinal services, including inpatient and outpatient procedures, diagnostic services, and clinic visits. This position involves assigning appropriate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and ensuring comprehensive capture of all hospital charges, including supplies and recovery times. Additionally, the specialist will audit accounts to guarantee precise coding and billing practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Abstract and code professional services and diagnoses for inpatient and outpatient encounters.
  • Assign correct CPT and ICD9 codes.
  • Complete coding and billing documentation accurately.
  • Perform reconciliations to ensure all charges are accounted for.
  • Provide constructive feedback to physicians regarding documentation practices.
  • Maintain up-to-date coding reference materials.
  • Educate physicians and staff on documentation, billing, and coding processes.
  • Communicate updates on billing and coding guidelines effectively.
  • Participate in meetings and share relevant information with the team.
  • Address pre-accounts receivable discrepancies and track compliance issues.
  • Correct billing errors and assist in appeals as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Cycle and Account Inquiry Unit staff to gather required documentation.
  • Offer additional coding and modifier guidance as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Experience of zero to two years in a relevant coding role.
  • A minimum accuracy rate of 94% on the organization's coding assessment.

Preferred:

  • A Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a Health Information Management program accredited by CAHIIM.
  • Prior experience in physician coding.

Management Responsibilities:
This position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities.
