Position Summary

The Coding Specialist I embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The Coding Specialist I is responsible for performing Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases, volume 10 (ICD10) coding through the abstraction of medical records, focusing on Evaluation and Management services. This role involves training physicians and other staff on documentation, billing, and coding, as well as executing various administrative and clerical tasks to support the core functions of the role. The Coding Specialist I also demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to resolve coding edits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilizes coding expertise to meticulously review medical records, employing all available documentation to abstract and code physician professional services and diagnosis codes (including inpatient admissions, bedside procedures, and diagnostic services).
  • Adheres to Official Guidelines and regulations to assign appropriate CPT and ICD10 codes and modifiers with a minimum accuracy of 95%.
  • Provides constructive feedback on documentation to physicians.
  • Maintains up-to-date coding reference materials.
  • Educates physicians and staff on documentation, billing, and coding relevant to their specialties.
  • Communicates new or revised billing and coding guidelines to providers and their specialties.
  • Participates in meetings and educational sessions, sharing relevant information with physicians and staff.
  • Addresses pre-accounts receivable edits and identifies recurring documentation issues.
  • Corrects inaccurately billed services, adds missing unbilled services, and provides necessary data to rectify CPT and ICD10 codes and modifiers.
  • May collaborate with Patient Accounting and other operational areas to assist with coding reimbursement and resolve claim issues.
  • Meets established productivity and quality standards for coding across various encounter types.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Experience of zero (0) to two (2) years in a relevant position.
  • A minimum accuracy of 94% on the organization's coding assessment.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a Health Information Management program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
  • Prior experience in physician coding.
