Sanctuary for Families is a premier organization in New York dedicated to supporting and advocating for individuals affected by domestic violence, sex trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. Each year, we empower numerous adults and children to transition from environments of fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive suite of services. Our extensive range of support services aids survivors in rebuilding their lives post-abuse while we actively work to eradicate gender violence through three primary strategies: direct service provision, outreach and educational initiatives, and systemic advocacy.

Role Summary

We are seeking a Project Assistant to provide essential support to attorneys involved in our Family Law Project. This role will focus on assisting in the representation of survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in various legal matters, including family offense cases, custody and visitation disputes, child and spousal support, and matrimonial issues. The Project Assistant will also be responsible for various administrative tasks, community outreach, and collaboration with partner organizations to promote systemic change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support project attorneys in all facets of litigation, including drafting and revising legal documents, conducting client interviews, preparing correspondence, gathering evidence, and maintaining case management systems.
  • Assist in organizing and providing administrative support for pro se clinics.
  • Engage in direct advocacy for clients with municipal and state agencies.
  • Conduct client intakes, schedule appointments, and maintain communication with clients as necessary.
  • Refer clients to suitable legal and social services both within and outside of the organization.
  • Prepare grant applications on behalf of clients to enhance their economic stability and provide emergency financial assistance.
  • Maintain client databases and files, assisting attorneys with case preparation and administrative tasks.
  • Help organize training sessions, meetings, and community outreach efforts, and participate in outreach activities as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant professional experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative capabilities, with a proactive and efficient approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Interest in legal systems and their effects on trauma survivors and marginalized communities.
  • Ability to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • High standards of integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in computer applications (including MS Office, MS Teams, Adobe Acrobat); familiarity with Salesforce is advantageous.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The budgeted salary for this position is $31.95 per hour, translating to an annual salary range of $52,650 - $58,158, commensurate with experience and in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.

This is a full-time position, requiring 35 hours per week, classified as hourly and non-exempt. The work schedule is currently hybrid, with the expectation to meet job location obligations.
