Role Summary

We are seeking a skilled family law attorney to conduct initial legal assessments, provide legal guidance, assist clients in preparing pro se family law petitions, facilitate legal clinics, and represent a limited number of clients in family law cases. The attorney will operate from our designated office and will report to the Senior Program Director and Associate Program Director of the Family Law Project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial legal assessments and follow-up consultations for clients seeking assistance in family law, including drafting necessary pro se petitions and filings.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to design, implement, and manage ongoing family law legal clinics aimed at aiding clients in preparing pro se petitions for Family and Supreme Courts.
  • Work with family law projects across multiple locations to establish and coordinate pro se services and clinics, while also partnering with other legal initiatives.
  • Oversee and mentor junior attorneys, project assistants, pro bono attorneys, interns, and volunteers in client interactions, litigation support, and case management.
  • Assist in the recruitment and onboarding of project assistants, in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Participate in performance evaluations for staff and contribute to program audits and improvements based on outcome evaluations.
  • Provide direct legal representation for a select group of clients in various family law matters, including custody, visitation, and support cases.
  • Offer advocacy in related areas, including criminal and child protective systems.
  • Facilitate client access to internal and external resources, including direct financial assistance.
  • Provide technical support to partner agencies.
  • Engage in community outreach, training, and educational initiatives.
  • Participate in advocacy committees and collaborate with other organizations to promote systemic change.
  • Stay informed on developments in pro bono services, domestic violence, and legal remedies for victims through participation in interagency conferences and legal association meetings.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree from an accredited institution.
  • Admission to the New York Bar.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience in family law.
  • Proficiency in additional languages is advantageous.
  • Strong advocacy, legal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and engage in public speaking.
  • Commitment to providing knowledgeable and empathetic legal support to victims of domestic violence.

Compensation

Salary range: $78,000 - $83,000 annually.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position, requiring 35 hours per week, classified as salaried and exempt. The role currently offers a hybrid work arrangement.
