Surgical Instrument Processing Specialist

Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and efficacy of surgical instruments and medical apparatus within the healthcare facility. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical tools, all while adhering to stringent infection control and safety protocols.
- Possess a solid understanding of aseptic techniques to mitigate the risk of infection.
- Have a foundational knowledge of microbiology as it pertains to surgical supply operations, particularly regarding the resistance of microorganisms to sterilization methods.
- Demonstrate proficiency in steam autoclaving procedures, which includes: 1. Conducting biological efficacy tests using incubated biological test vials. 2. Utilizing chemical indicators for steam sterilization exposure. 3. Understanding the Bowie-Dick test and its interpretation. 4. Accurately recording sterilization test results.
- Exhibit knowledge of chemical sterilization methods such as Sterrad, including: 1. Performing biological efficacy tests. 2. Using chemical indicators for sterilization exposure. 3. Conducting routine maintenance of sterilant cartridges. 4. Properly documenting sterilization test outcomes.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, including their specific cleaning, sterilizing, and storage requirements.
- Familiarity with surgical specialty instruments across various fields such as General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedics, and Microscopic procedures.
- Ability to lift instrument baskets weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally handle items up to 50 pounds.
- Capable of pushing and pulling heavy carts and performing frequent bending and lifting tasks.
Work hours may involve prolonged standing, typically up to 8 hours, with standard breaks for rest and meals.
- Must be able to wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a warm, humid environment.
Compensation: Negotiable, based on experience.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must fulfill at least one of the following criteria:
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or a higher designation from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA).
- Completion of a recognized CRCST training program with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Graduation from an accredited Operating Room Technician training program with at least 2 years of documented experience in a Sterile Processing Service setting.
- Completion of a U.S. military training program for Surgical Technicians with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
- VA Level 2 certification with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
- Non-certified technicians with a minimum of 5 years of documented and verifiable hands-on experience in Sterile Processing Services.
