Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare environment by ensuring the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical devices within the surgical facility. This position requires adherence to infection control and safety protocols throughout all stages of the sterilization process.
Key Responsibilities:- Possess comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques to mitigate infection risks.
- Understand microbiological principles relevant to surgical supply operations, particularly regarding microbial resistance to sterilization methods.
- Demonstrate proficiency in steam autoclaving procedures, including:
- Conducting biological efficacy tests using certified incubated biological test vials.
- Utilizing chemical indicators for steam sterilization verification.
- Administering and interpreting the Bowie-Dick test results.
- Accurately recording and interpreting sterilization test outcomes.
- Exhibit knowledge of chemical sterilization methods, such as Sterrad, including:
- Performing biological efficacy tests with incubated biological test vials.
- Employing chemical indicators for sterilization exposure assessment.
- Executing routine maintenance procedures for sterilant cartridges.
- Documenting and interpreting sterilization test results accurately.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, including their specific cleaning, sterilizing, and storage requirements.
- Familiarity with various surgical specialty instruments, including those used in General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedics, and Microscopy.
- Physical ability to lift instrument baskets weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally heavier items.
- Capable of pushing and pulling heavy carts and performing repetitive bending and lifting tasks.
Work Environment:
Ability to stand for extended periods, frequently up to 8 hours, while wearing necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Must be able to work in warm and humid conditions while utilizing PPE.
Salary: Negotiable, based on experience.
Qualifications:To qualify for the Sterile Processing Technician position, candidates must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher from a recognized professional organization.
- Completion of a nationally accredited CRCST training program with at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Graduation from an Operating Room Technician training program with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Service setting.
- Completion of a military training program for Surgical Technicians with at least 2 years of experience in Sterile Processing Services.
- VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the SPS field.
- Non-certified technicians with at least 5 years of documented and verifiable hands-on experience in SPS.
Work Schedule:
- 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday.
Experience Required:
- Minimum of 2 years as a technician in a relevant field.
Certifications:
- BLS Certification (Required)
- ACLS Certification (Preferred)
Work Location: Multiple locations.
