Job Overview

Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare environment by ensuring the thorough decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical apparatus. This position requires adherence to stringent infection control and safety protocols throughout all operational phases.

  • Demonstrated understanding of aseptic techniques to mitigate infection risks.
  • Knowledge of microbiological principles as they pertain to surgical supply operations, particularly regarding the resistance of microorganisms to sterilization methods.
  • Familiarity with steam autoclaving protocols, including:
    • Conducting biological efficacy tests using incubated biological test vials.
    • Utilizing chemical indicators for steam sterilization exposure.
    • Understanding the Bowie-Dick test and accurately interpreting results.
  • Proficient in chemical sterilization methods, such as Sterrad, including:
    • Performing biological efficacy tests with incubated biological test vials.
    • Using internal and external chemical indicators for sterilization exposure.
    • Executing routine maintenance on sterilization equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, including their specific cleaning, sterilizing, and storage requirements.
  • Awareness of surgical specialty instruments across various fields, including General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedics, and Microscopy.
  • Physical capability to lift instrument baskets weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally heavier items.
  • Ability to maneuver carts weighing several hundred pounds and engage in frequent bending and lifting tasks.

Work Environment:
Must be prepared to stand for extended periods, typically up to 8 hours per shift, while adhering to safety and hygiene standards.

  • Must be able to wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) effectively.
  • Ability to work in warm and humid conditions while utilizing PPE.

Compensation: Negotiable, based on experience.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher from a recognized body.
  • Completion of a nationally accredited CRCST training program with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Graduation from an Operating Room Technician training program with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Service setting.
  • Completion of a military training program for Surgical Technicians with at least 2 years of experience in Sterile Processing.
  • VA Level 2 certification with 2 years of current experience in the SPS field.
  • Non-certified technicians with at least 5 years of documented hands-on experience in SPS.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract, Temporary

Schedule:

  • 8-hour shifts
  • Monday to Friday

Experience Required:

  • ACLS Certification (Preferred)
  • BLS Certification (Required)

Relocation:

  • Willingness to relocate before starting work (Required)
