Job Summary

The Library Student Assistant provides exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and guests at the Palo Alto University Library. This role involves staffing the library circulation desk, assisting patrons with library resources and services, and performing administrative tasks related to library functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service: Provide a welcoming presence and excellent customer service to all library patrons.
  • Assistance and Support: Offer friendly and knowledgeable assistance to students, faculty, staff, and guests in locating and using library resources and systems.
  • Circulation and Administrative Tasks: Perform routine administrative and circulation work, including answering phones, scheduling study room use, retrieving and checking in/out library materials, and preparing materials for shipment.
  • Collection Management: Assist librarians with organizing, processing, and analyzing library collections, including preparing test materials for distribution and checking test kits for completeness.
  • Patron Support: Identify patron needs and devise strategies for meeting those needs, including referring patrons to librarians when necessary.
  • Confidentiality and Communication: Maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively with library staff and patrons.
  • Teamwork and Flexibility: Coordinate with other Library Student Assistants and librarians to ensure consistent and effective operations at the circulation desk.
Requirements
  • Education: Enrollment as a student at Palo Alto University.
  • Experience: One year of library or customer service experience preferred.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to learn and perform new tasks quickly, punctuality, dependability, initiative, and flexibility.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift boxes of books and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds, push and pull full book carts weighing 250 pounds, bend and reach to place books on library shelves, and use a step-stool to reach high shelving locations.
Working Conditions

Daytime, evening, and weekend shifts are available during regular terms and between terms. The library is generally open between terms from 10am-6pm daily.

Salary and Benefits
