Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Library Technician to join our team at Foothill De Anza Community College District. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a wide range of library support services, including directing and instructing students and staff, responding to complex inquiries, and maintaining the library's collection and cataloging systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and instruct students and staff at the circulation desk, reserves, and reference desks, and direct library patrons to appropriate locations and/or staff.
  • Respond to difficult and complex conflict resolution, inquiries, questions, and requests for information, and interpret and apply regulations, policies, procedures, systems, rules, and precedents in response to inquiries and concerns from patrons.
  • Direct library patrons in the use of library facilities and equipment, including study rooms, computer labs, online catalog systems, copiers, printers, magazine indexes, and the internet.
  • Instruct patrons on the use of a variety of computer hardware, software, and web-based systems found in the library, evaluate, respond to, and troubleshoot problems, and generate reports and install system upgrades as needed.
  • Recruit, select, and hire student workers and/or general assistants, evaluate performance, monitor hours worked, and manage allocated budgets, supervise, train, and schedule student workers and/or general assistants to provide adequate coverage of assigned areas of the library.
  • Maintain the collection of course reserve materials, coordinate with instructors to identify textbooks and other materials needed, write grants for reserve textbook purchases, purchase, process, and catalog materials, manage budgets, and remove expired items from the reserve collection.
  • Update quarterly Fair Use agreements with instructors who have course materials on reserve to ensure copyright compliance.
  • Identify overdue and damaged materials, determine liability for damaged materials, resolve billing issues according to established guidelines, collect and record fees and fines, make cash deposits, and submit credit card payments to accounting.
  • Acquire new print and non-print instructional materials, including periodicals, by checking for duplication and similar materials in the current collection before ordering, researching materials and vendors to determine best prices and terms and conditions, selecting materials and vendors, and creating contracts, order materials and track order status, receive shipments, process invoices for payment, participate in planning and monitor budgets, and prepare budget reports.
  • Catalog and process new instructional materials, maintain the library catalog, select, edit, export, and verify a matching bibliographic record using the WorldCat database or create original bibliographic records, and import records into the library catalog.
  • Verify authority headings and classification using Library of Congress Subject Headings and other necessary resources.
  • Re-catalog and reclassify materials as needed, correct cataloging errors, call number conflicts, and labeling issues, delete records for obsolete items in the catalog and remove items from shelves for processing out of the collection and appropriate disposal, and delete library holdings for extant copies.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests for both lending and borrowing materials, perform searches online, place requests with participating libraries, notify patrons about availability of requested items, receive and distribute requested materials, process renewals, and return borrowed items to lending libraries.
  • Prepare circulating materials for use, print spine labels, insert anti-theft devices, apply labels, label protectors, book tape, dust jacket covers, laminate, etc.
  • Manage the periodical collection and daily newspaper subscriptions by receiving, logging, labeling, and checking in magazines and newspapers and weeding the periodical collection annually to reflect holdings, review annual renewal requests from vendors, prepare invoices, and remove discontinued titles and add new titles, and file claims for newspapers not delivered.
  • Assess damaged books and resource materials, clean, mend, cover, and repair damaged books and other instructional materials, assist in the discarding of old books and materials according to established policies and procedures, remove holdings as appropriate, and delete discarded titles from the database as appropriate.
  • Process donations of books or other materials according to library guidelines, communicate with donors regarding drop-off, and issue receipts.
  • Write procedures and make recommendations for assigned service areas, implement library policies and procedures.
  • Participate in program reviews, research and provide data and statistics, and make recommendations on budget needs.
  • Identify and report safety and maintenance concerns, open and close the library daily.
  • Perform a wide variety of library support duties, including developing signage and flyers, ordering and maintaining office and other related supplies, and serving on Library, division, and/or campus-wide committees and governance-related meetings.
  • Operate a computer and related hardware and software for cataloging and maintaining records, generate statistical reports, and assist others in the use of related computer hardware and software as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records, verify accuracy of information, research discrepancies, and record information.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of providing functional direction and training.
  • Knowledge of standard library practices and procedures, including circulation.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and techniques of library classification and cataloging.
  • Knowledge of database searching techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles of training and providing work direction.
  • Knowledge of record-keeping principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of data collection and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic principles and cash handling.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques for working with groups and fostering effective team interaction to ensure teamwork is conducted smoothly.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and organizational policies and procedures relevant to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and software relevant to work performed.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, students, and District staff, including individuals of diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation.

  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Collect, organize, and prepare data for records and reports; prepare complex records and reports.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign, train, and review the work of assigned student workers.
  • Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  • Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college in library science or a related field, and four (4) years of technical experience in a library environment or related setting.
