We strive to empower individuals seeking legal information and navigate the legal system, particularly for those without representation.
Our dedicated team assists over 100,000 patrons each year, both locally and globally, continually expanding our reach through innovative programs and workshops in collaboration with various partners.
POSITION SUMMARY
This part-time role is designed to serve as the primary point of contact for library users, delivering circulation services and managing daily operational tasks such as document delivery, loose leaf filing, and shelving of materials. Exceptional customer service is a key component of this position, whether interacting in person, over the phone, or via electronic communication.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patron Assistance:
- Support patrons in utilizing library resources and materials with professionalism and courtesy.
- Manage the registration of new borrowers, including application review and fee collection.
- Reopen closed borrower accounts as per established protocols.
- Handle the charging and discharging of library materials.
- Process holds, renewals, and flagged items efficiently.
- Issue library cards and maintain accurate non-borrower account records.
- Assist patrons with library computers and equipment usage.
- Help staff and users locate appropriate materials and utilize library resources effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of book sales and supplies at the circulation desk.
- Perform general library operational tasks, including opening procedures and equipment management.
- File and retrieve patron files as needed.
Shelving Duties:
- Re-shelve and retrieve library materials to assist patrons and maintain order.
- Organize materials for shelving and shift items as directed.
Organizational Maintenance:
- Ensure the organization of hold, reserve, and re-shelving areas.
- Maintain the order of library books, newspapers, and audio materials.
- Regularly shelf-read assigned areas to ensure proper arrangement.
Team Collaboration:
- Contribute to discussions on policy and procedural changes.
- Work with divisional staff to enhance borrower engagement through new services.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues to coordinate tasks and resolve issues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including support for other library departments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively.
- Strong customer service skills with effective communication abilities.
- Proficiency in following written and oral instructions.
- Capability to organize materials according to library classification systems.
- Familiarity with personal computers and attention to detail.
Preferred:
- Associate's Degree or higher.
- Previous library experience.
- Knowledge of library systems and office productivity tools.
- Familiarity with a foreign language.
- Experience in customer service and shelving library materials.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position is situated in a dynamic office environment that is open to the public, featuring a large reading room and various library facilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Physical activities may include bending, reaching, and moving throughout the library.
- Exposure to dust and other environmental conditions may occur.
