About the Role

The San Mateo County Bar Association is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in providing legal advice and guidance to our staff and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide Legal Advice and Guidance: Offer expert legal advice and guidance to our staff and stakeholders on a wide range of legal matters, including contracts, agreements, and compliance issues.
  2. Develop and Implement Compliance Strategies: Assist in developing and implementing effective compliance strategies to ensure that our organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  3. Represent the Organization: Serve as a trusted representative of the organization, providing legal advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with our staff to provide legal support and guidance on a wide range of matters.
Requirements
  1. Juris Doctorate: Possess a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  2. Bar Membership: Be a member in good standing of the California Bar Association or be willing to take and pass the California Bar exam.
  3. Experience: Have a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience post-law degree in a law firm or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation, or other entity.
  4. Skills and Qualifications: Possess exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively. Demonstrate high integrity, outstanding interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  1. Public Sector Experience: Have experience working in the public sector, particularly in construction contracting and claims.
  2. Environmental Experience: Have experience in environmental, health, and safety, including hazardous materials, hazardous waste, storm water, OSHA, and administrative enforcement actions.
  3. Government Contracts: Have experience advising public agency clients on CEQA compliance strategies and litigation, as well as experience with federal government contracts (FAR/DEAR).
