The City of Tustin Police Department is actively seeking qualified candidates for the position of Experienced Police Officer. This recruitment is exclusively for individuals who have prior experience as a Police Officer and is conducted on a continuous basis to address the staffing needs of the City.

To be considered for this role, applicants must submit a completed City application along with a copy of their POST certificate.

This position operates under general supervision and involves performing law enforcement duties aimed at safeguarding life and property. Responsibilities include:

  • Patrolling designated areas, either in a patrol vehicle or on foot.
  • Responding to public assistance calls.
  • Making arrests and issuing citations for legal violations.
  • Investigating criminal activities, including misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Securing and preserving crime scenes and evidence.
  • Conducting interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Testifying in court as required.
  • Providing information and assistance to the public.
  • Transporting and escorting detainees.
  • Preparing detailed reports.
  • Rendering first aid in emergency situations.

Applicants must be available to work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Selection Process:
  1. Physical Agility Test
  2. Oral Interview
  3. Background Investigation and Polygraph Examination
  4. Interview with the Police Chief
  5. Psychological and Medical Examinations (upon conditional offer)

Candidates who successfully complete all stages of the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list for potential hiring. This list remains valid for one year, and the selection process typically spans 6-9 months.

Important Note: A thorough background investigation and polygraph examination will be conducted for all candidates under consideration. Recent illegal activities, including drug use or theft, may result in disqualification. A pre-employment medical evaluation, psychological assessment, and drug screening will be required upon a conditional job offer.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Monitoring and controlling traffic conditions.
  • Conducting investigations of various incidents, including accidents and criminal activities.
  • Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Participating in training and development activities.
  • Providing traffic control and security at public events.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  • License/Certificates: Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an approved California Basic Police Academy is required.
  • Experience: Must be currently employed as a Police Officer or have been employed within the last six months.
  • Skills: Proficient in writing clearly and driving safely under various conditions.
  • Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Background: Free from felony or serious misdemeanor convictions; must demonstrate good judgment and ethical behavior.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be in excellent physical condition, capable of performing the duties of a Police Officer.
