DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Wastewater Utility Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and upkeep of the wastewater utility system. This role involves utilizing problem-solving skills to address operational challenges and performing maintenance tasks as needed. Key responsibilities include:
  • Operating and maintaining sampling instruments and conducting field analysis of water samples.
  • Collecting, preserving, and transporting samples to laboratories for further analysis.
  • Managing valves and flushing hydrants to resolve water quality concerns.
  • Documenting and maintaining reports, forms, and records related to operations, service calls, and maintenance activities using a data tracking system.
  • Operating centrifuge or dryer equipment in the sludge processing area and performing maintenance tasks associated with wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Isolating water lines by operating valves and utilizing GIS to identify valve locations.
  • Renewing utility services in designated areas.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Employees may experience exposure to extreme temperatures, moisture, and air pollutants. The position may also involve occasional exposure to chemical substances and minor physical injuries such as cuts and bruises.

This role requires physical stamina, including bending, stooping, and lifting heavy items, with occasional walking on uneven surfaces.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with the ability to follow basic written and oral instructions effectively. Specialized training in operating construction equipment is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least six months of general maintenance or fieldwork experience is necessary.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Texas driver's license is required, along with adherence to the City of Houston's driving policy.

PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in plant maintenance or collection systems. Veteran applicants will also be prioritized if they meet the qualifications for the position.
