Job Title: Assistant Probation Officer

Job Summary:

The Assistant Probation Officer position at Dakota County's Juvenile Services Center is a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of youth in our care. As a member of our treatment team, you will provide direct supervision, support, and guidance to clients, helping them achieve their case-plan goals and develop essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct services to clients, including monitoring resident compliance with facility rules and assisting with case-plan goals.
  • Facilitate client programming, including recreation, cognitive groups, meals, and schooling, utilizing Evidence-Based Practices such as cognitive-behavioral groups.
  • Employ Motivational Interviewing to de-escalate clients in crisis situations.
  • Complete daily client notes and monthly reports.
  • Respond to residents, guardians, victims, and Dakota County services' questions and concerns in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Maintain the safety and security of the JSC, including monitoring and observing clients, providing effective interventions, and using safety equipment and trained control tactic restraints.
  • Staff the Control Center, monitoring program activities, communicating emergencies, controlling movement, and answering incoming phone calls.
  • Prepare clients for court and assist with the intake process.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent in Corrections, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related Human Services field, and one year of experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.
  • Or three years of experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.
  • Or a combination of education and experience to equal three or more years.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • First Aid/CPR certificate within six months of hire.

Work Environment:

This position is performed within the juvenile detention center, with occasional lifting requirements of up to 20 pounds and frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds. Employees may be exposed to hazardous materials, intense noise, and equipment such as computers, scanners, and restraint chairs.

Selection Process:

The examination/selection process for this classification will consist of a rating of your training and experience from the application materials submitted. The top scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
