GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Revenue Accounting Specialist plays a crucial role in executing routine technical accounting and clerical tasks associated with revenue items received in cash or equivalent forms. This position involves systematic clerical activities related to the receipt, processing, and distribution of incoming correspondence. Responsibilities include meticulous recording, classification, examination, and verification of financial records, documents, and reports, all performed under moderate supervision, allowing for limited initiative and independent judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Financial Documentation: Classify, code, post, and balance financial accounting documents and records. This includes assigning Master Index Code numbers along with the correct budget combinations, fund account numbers, PCA, project, chart field, transaction codes, and accounting rules for deposits and financial calculations.
  2. Report Compilation: Compile statistical, financial, accounting, or auditing reports and tables concerning cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses.
  3. Mail Processing: Open, sort, and process incoming mail and supporting documentation. Ensure completeness and accuracy of received monetary instruments, returning any that are inaccurate or incomplete. Document total dollar amounts and the number of items received in a Mail Log for system balancing.
  4. Batch Management: Organize, process, and verify assigned batches. Record total dollar amounts and the number of items in each batch, maintaining a Batch Log for system balancing.
  5. Sequential Numbering: Process and print identifying sequential numbers on all non-cash documents associated with each revenue item in the assigned batches, verifying the accuracy of previously determined currency totals.
  6. Discrepancy Resolution: Research, analyze, and coordinate payment discrepancies, auditing batched revenue items in accordance with established procedures.
  7. Public Inquiries: Respond to inquiries from department personnel and the public regarding Central Cash Receiving procedures and related documentation.
  8. Attendance: Maintain regular attendance and adhere to approved work hours in accordance with agency policies.
  9. Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional coursework in accounting or knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles is advantageous.

Experience: A minimum of one year of experience in complex clerical activities or handling cash instruments is necessary. Experience in accounting or bookkeeping is a plus.

Skills: Proficiency in using a 10-key calculator, data entry, and common software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases is required.

Interpersonal Skills: Must demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy, establishing and maintaining positive professional relationships.

Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment, meeting multiple deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.

Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail and the ability to examine data for trends and discrepancies.

Technology Proficiency: Must possess the necessary skills to utilize relevant software and systems efficiently.

Confidentiality: Ability to handle sensitive information responsibly and adhere to applicable laws and policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the ability to perform essential functions in an office environment, including standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
