Position Summary:

The Substance Use Prevention Training Coordinator operates under the guidance of the Director of Sexual Health Services and Community Resources. This role is dedicated to engaging men who have sex with men (MSM) who use methamphetamine in the APLA Health & Wellness crystal methamphetamine initiative.

The Coordinator plays a crucial role in executing strategies aimed at educating individuals who engage in crystal methamphetamine use about harm reduction techniques. Additionally, this position ensures alignment with APLA Health & Wellness' harm reduction philosophy and broader health education objectives. Below is a detailed outline of responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage and recruit individuals from the target demographic into group interventions that emphasize harm reduction related to substance use and the prevention of HIV and STDs.
  • Implement contingency management strategies, which encompass participant recruitment through various outreach methods, overseeing urine sample collection, documenting test outcomes, distributing incentives, and ensuring participant retention throughout the program.
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of both in-person and virtual workshops aimed at educating the target demographic and organizations interested in understanding crystal methamphetamine use and its implications.
  • Compile and maintain data for the Referral Network, connecting target populations and community stakeholders to essential services such as HIV testing, STD treatment, substance abuse intervention, and mental health resources.
  • Collaborate with community partners to establish a comprehensive network of care opportunities, including mental health providers, substance abuse counselors, and treatment facilities, to enhance the well-being of individuals using crystal methamphetamine.
  • Oversee the design and production of promotional materials for program activities.
  • Maintain and enhance program visibility across social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of knowledge by preparing and submitting abstracts for professional conferences and presenting at community events.
  • Ensure that services are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
  • Supervise volunteers and peer health educators as needed.
Participate in community meetings as required.
  • Prepare quantitative and qualitative reports as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned as necessary to meet organizational needs.

Education and Experience:
Associate's degree in a human services-related field or one year of experience working with gay and non-gay identified African American and Latino MSM and transgender individuals facing substance use challenges. Experience in outreach, community engagement, and educational training is essential. Familiarity with substance use issues and harm reduction strategies is preferred. Experience in a nonprofit setting and specific training related to HIV and health issues is advantageous.

Knowledge:
Understanding of health disparities related to HIV and STD transmission; principles of harm reduction; behavior modification techniques; human sexuality; substance use and abuse; motivational interviewing; outreach strategies; data management; and the health and social concerns of diverse populations.

Skills:
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams, engage with community stakeholders, organize community initiatives, identify harm reduction goals, manage multiple deadlines in a dynamic environment, and maintain confidentiality while responding sensitively to social inequities.

Working Conditions:
This position primarily involves office work with occasional physical tasks, such as lifting materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Daily use of a personal computer is required for data entry and document management.

Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license, proof of auto liability insurance, and access to a personal vehicle for work-related activities are necessary. Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements or approved exemptions is mandatory.
