Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic Specialist

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Facilities & Operations Division is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic Specialist to join our Crane/Rigging and Fleet team.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will perform maintenance, repair, and installations of complex mechanical, electromechanical, and hydraulic systems and equipment. This role requires a high degree of skill and practical knowledge in the use of various tools and equipment, including specialized tools and larger power equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform maintenance, repair, installation, and fabrication of complex mechanical, electromechanical, and electrical systems and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and make repairs for unusually complex problems; provide expert practical knowledge on installations; and implement comprehensive solutions to problems identified.
  • Inspect, service, and repair heavy material handling equipment including the most complicated mobile and overhead cranes that range up to 100 tons in capacity.
  • Maintain the highly complex braking system on the overhead cranes (up to 100 tons).
  • Inspect, maintain and repair functional parts of equipment and machinery such as compressors, gasoline and diesel engines, motors, generators and pumps, etc.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, disassemble, service, clean, replace, rebuild, reassemble, test and install mechanical and electrical components and equipment.
  • Maintain electrical equipment up to 24 volts DC.
  • Maintain equipment operating records and log sheets.
  • Completely overhaul, modify and rebuild diesel and gas powered engines.
  • Responsible for all phases of a repair operation from identifying and diagnosing problems to completely rebuilding and testing.
  • Modify existing equipment, or other items in exceptionally difficult places and under situations that require a high degree of understanding of the processes involved and the ability to solve problems in nonstandard ways.
  • Fabricate and install equipment or other items requiring new or unusual skills and procedures; and develop new methods or procedures for carrying out assignments and improving equipment.
  • Research and locate required parts as necessary.
  • Provide instruction and training to other employees in their work group.
  • Adhere to appropriate SLAC's environmental safety and health DOE, OSHA guidelines and regulations. Ensure that safety rules are followed.
Requirements:
  • Vocational training plus minimum of five years of experience in the trade or Journeyman level or a combination of education and relevant experience including troubleshooting and repairing systems and equipment.
  • Must have high degree of skill and practical knowledge in the use of a wide variety of tools and equipment, including specialized tools such as various hand tools, portable electrical and pneumatic tools, electronic test equipment, soldering and brazing equipment, pneumatic and hydraulic maintenance and test equipment, and larger power equipment such as lathes, mills, drills, metal shears, grinders, and welding machines, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge and skills in gasoline and diesel engine maintenance, high pressure hydraulics, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, steering/suspension systems, motors and drives.
  • Ability to work independently on most assignments.
  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
  • Ability to use computerized automated diagnostic systems.
  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state DOE, OSHA rules and regulations.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid California Non-Commercial Class C Driver's license.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The expected pay range for this position is $49.03 (Step 1) - $59.38 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit.
