Position Overview:

At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division oversees one of the foremost scientific facilities, encompassing over 400 acres and more than 150 structures dedicated to the Department of Energy. Our mission is to support the Laboratory's scientific objectives through the safe and efficient engineering, construction, operation, and maintenance of essential equipment, buildings, and infrastructure.

We are currently looking for a Pipefitting Specialist Technician to enhance our Mechanical Utilities Department. This team is tasked with the operation and upkeep of all mechanical infrastructure systems, which include cooling water systems (LCW, CTW, CHW, & PCHW), underground utilities (storm and sanitary, natural gas, & compressed air piping systems), and HVAC systems for both office and laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of various systems, including water treatment facilities, filtration systems, cooling towers, and domestic water and sanitary systems.
  • Manage the installation, maintenance, and modification of instrumentation for these systems, such as flow meters, pressure differential meters, and temperature gauges.
  • Oversee the installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of piping for water systems, including low conductivity and de-ionized water systems as well as pneumatic systems.
  • Ensure the integrity and functionality of all systems.
  • Implement installation, modification, and maintenance of fire protection systems, including fire mains, building sprinklers, fire hydrants, and halon and deluge systems.
  • Manage the installation, modification, and maintenance of natural gas and processed gas systems, including nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, special mixtures, and explosive gases.
  • Conduct flushing and purging of all systems, including low conductivity water systems, radioactive water systems, and cooling systems for magnets and power supplies.
  • Supervise the installation, maintenance, and modification of water cooling systems for high voltage power supplies, shunts, chokes, and electrical cables.
  • Procure materials necessary for various tasks.
  • Work with a variety of piping materials including plastic, galvanized, copper, brass, cast iron, hose, stainless steel, and black iron.
  • Perform brazing, soldering, or basic welding as required to connect metal piping materials.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols.
  • Execute all position welding (downhand and uphand) in diverse locations, utilizing Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) techniques.
  • Cut and fit carbon steel pipe using oxyacetylene processes.
  • Fabricate pipe supports and other ancillary components.
  • Interpret and apply weld symbols.
  • Carry out any duties as described in the Pipefitter specification or as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent vocational training along with five years of experience in the plumbing/pipefitting trade. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Practical knowledge across a wide range of fields and equipment, including mechanics, electronics, electricity, instrumentation, pneumatics, hydraulics, high-pressure gas systems, compressors, pumps, motors, and valves, with the ability to utilize various hand tools and heavy equipment. Proficiency in reading and understanding the Uniform Plumbing Code is essential.
  • Experience with industrial plumbing fittings and fixtures is preferred.
  • Ability to maneuver or install large pipes and work at elevated heights.
  • Compliance with building codes, industry standards, and safety procedures is necessary.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using all hand and power tools relevant to the plumbing trade, including the ability to braze and solder copper and brass pipe and fittings.
  • Welding experience, particularly in MIG and TIG welding, is advantageous.
  • Capability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Familiarity with business software applications is beneficial.
  • Commitment to adhering to environmental and safety regulations and requirements.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Valid California non-commercial Class C driver's license with a good driving record.

Employment Duration: Continuing

The expected pay range for this position is $50.4 (Step 1) - $[Step 10] per hour. Placement within this range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on various factors including the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007, and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
