Position Overview

Earthjustice is seeking an Environmental Litigation Associate to enhance our dedicated team of legal professionals committed to promoting a transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to sustainable alternatives. This role will be situated within our Clean Energy Program, concentrating on legal proceedings, advocacy, and strategic initiatives before state public utility commissions, administrative agencies, and courts to support a fair shift towards clean, affordable, and dependable energy solutions.

Role Responsibilities

The Environmental Litigation Associate will engage in a variety of tasks alongside senior attorneys and professional staff, including:

  • Conducting thorough investigations and developing legal strategies for administrative appeals and litigation.
  • Performing legal research, drafting memos and briefs, and preparing for oral arguments.
  • Representing Earthjustice in proceedings before state and federal courts, public utility commissions, and other administrative bodies.
  • Preparing comments on proposed agency actions and environmental assessments.
  • Fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace culture that values different perspectives.
  • Participating in the recruitment and supervision of law clerks and externs.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate required.
  • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction or willing to apply for membership within a specified timeframe.
  • 2-5 years of experience in litigation and legal advocacy, preferably with a focus on energy issues.
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, sound judgment, initiative, and creativity.
  • Ability to travel as necessary for case-related work.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse clients and partners.
  • Commitment to public interest work and a passion for environmental justice.

Compensation and Benefits

Earthjustice offers a competitive compensation package, including comprehensive benefits. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
