Position Overview

Earthjustice is seeking an Environmental Litigation Associate to enhance our dedicated team of legal professionals committed to promoting a transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to sustainable alternatives. This role will be situated within our Clean Energy Program, concentrating on legal actions, advocacy efforts, and strategic initiatives before state public utility commissions, administrative agencies, and judicial courts, all aimed at fostering an equitable shift towards clean, affordable, and dependable energy solutions.

As a leading nonprofit environmental law organization, Earthjustice tackles significant, precedent-setting legal challenges nationwide. We leverage the power of law and collaborative partnerships to safeguard public health, protect natural landscapes and wildlife, advance clean energy initiatives, and combat climate change. Our collaborations with numerous organizations address critical environmental issues, driving meaningful change for the planet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive investigations, legal research, and case development in collaboration with senior attorneys and professional staff.
  • Engage in various aspects of energy advocacy and litigation, including drafting legal documents, preparing expert testimony, and participating in hearings.
  • Represent Earthjustice in state and federal courts, public utility commissions, and other administrative forums, both remotely and in person.
  • Prepare and submit comments on proposed agency actions, permits, and environmental assessments.
  • Support initiatives that promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Develop skills to act as a spokesperson for media engagements.
  • Assist in the recruitment and supervision of student law clerks and externs.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate required.
  • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction or willing to apply for membership within a specified timeframe.
  • 2-5 years of experience in litigation and legal advocacy, preferably with a focus on energy issues.
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, sound judgment, initiative, and creativity.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary for case-related activities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients and partner organizations.
  • Commitment to public interest work and a passion for environmental justice.
