The Perfusionist is accountable to the Chief of Perfusion Services and plays a crucial role in executing Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) with a high level of proficiency, adhering to quality standards established by the MAH Quality Department and the ethical guidelines of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). This role demands independence and sound clinical judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and manage cardiopulmonary perfusion apparatus when CPB is required. Oversee anticoagulation, maintain acid-base equilibrium, and ensure optimal cardiovascular function while administering fluids, including blood products, during CPB.
  • Choose appropriate circuits and techniques for effective perfusion management. Identify and react to significant variations in patient metrics during CPB. Responsible for the operation of intra-aortic balloon pumps in the Operating Room and the safe transport of patients on these devices to the Intensive Care Unit.
  • While VAD and transplant experience are not required, proficiency in setting up, priming, and operating Cardiohelp ECMO is essential.
  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments and evaluations of patient histories to ensure readiness for CPB. Engage in research associated with cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass, which may involve operating CPB equipment, monitoring physiological and hemodynamic parameters, and collecting data.
  • Manage autologous blood recovery systems and gather data related to the Autologous Blood Recovery Program across various clinical departments.
  • Participate in the quality assurance processes for perfusion equipment as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible for American Board Certification in CPB.
  • Licensed Perfusionist in Massachusetts or provisional.
  • 0-1 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) is preferred. Must achieve CCP certification within two years of hire and maintain annual certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access, and capable of producing complex documents, performing analyses, and maintaining databases.
