The Perfusionist is accountable to the Chief of Perfusion Services and plays a critical role in managing Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) with a focus on quality standards established by the MAH Quality Department and the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). This role demands independence and sound clinical judgment. Mount Auburn Hospital is dedicated to adult cardiac care, providing perfusion services across various clinical departments for cell savers, ACTs, and limited ECMO.

Job Responsibilities:

Key Duties

Prepare and operate cardiopulmonary perfusion apparatus whenever CPB is necessary. Oversee anticoagulation, maintain acid-base equilibrium, cardiovascular stability, and manage fluid administration, including blood products, during CPB. Choose appropriate circuits and techniques for effective perfusion management. Identify and react to significant alterations in patient metrics during CPB. Responsible for the management of intra-aortic balloon pumps in the Operating Room and for the transport of patients on these devices to the Intensive Care Unit. While VAD or transplant experience is not required, the candidate must be capable of setting up, priming, and operating Cardiohelp ECMO. Conduct thorough preoperative assessments and evaluations of patient histories to ensure readiness for CPB. Engage in research activities related to cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass, which may involve operating CPB equipment, monitoring physiological and hemodynamic parameters, and collecting data. Operate autologous blood recovery systems and gather data related to the Autologous Blood Recovery Program across various clinical departments. Participate in the quality assurance processes for perfusion equipment as needed.

Required Qualifications

Eligible for American Board Certification in CPB. Licensed Perfusionist in Massachusetts or provisional. 0-1 years of relevant experience. Certification as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) is preferred. Must obtain CCP within two years of hire and maintain annual certification. Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access, and other web-based tools. Capable of producing complex documents, conducting analyses, and maintaining databases.
