Job Overview
The Manufacturing Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering technical support to operations, focusing on achieving excellence in manufacturing performance concerning People, Quality, Velocity, and Cost (PQVC).

This position involves applying engineering expertise to manufacturing processes related to wiring, locomotive components, and the electrical/mechanical assembly of locomotives and their parts.

Key Responsibilities
The Manufacturing Engineer will:

  • Utilize engineering principles to enhance the manufacturing environment, demonstrating the ability to work independently.
  • Support a specific value stream while exhibiting a strong desire for learning and increased responsibilities.
  • Develop alternative designs for ongoing production and implement changes through the MCR process.
  • Communicate essential documentation such as bills of material, production routings, and tooling requirements.
  • Provide liaison support, ensuring timely initiation and completion of MCR documentation.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to address manufacturing challenges and propose solutions.
  • Process Manufacturing Change Requests (MCRs) within the ERP-LN system.
  • Facilitate print modifications and coordinate updates with the drafting team.
  • Engage with program teams to ensure timely product launches and contribute to model year initiatives.
  • Conduct cost analyses for product and process alternatives.
  • Participate in daily production feedback meetings to drive continuous improvement.
  • Offer technical process support to team members.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues related to locomotives.
  • Assist in establishing assembly sequencing and process flow for new programs.
  • Maintain area layouts and control visual and written routings.
  • Support the development of plant and process layouts for new orders.
  • Draft process specifications and recommend ergonomic enhancements.
  • Formulate action plans aimed at optimizing processes to reduce cycle times and waste.
  • Lead initiatives for capital improvements in the area.
  • Explore and implement new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Engage in design development phases to ensure manufacturability of new orders.
  • Maintain PFMEA documentation and simulate continuous improvement processes.
  • Perform cost analysis for product and process alternatives.
  • Draft specifications for manufacturing equipment and advise on procurement.
  • Monitor assembly equipment during production start-up and audit manufacturing practices.
  • Attend training sessions and other professional development activities.
  • Exemplify the values of Progress Rail in all responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience
Required:

  • At least 3 years of relevant engineering experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Experience in product design.
  • Strong knowledge in electrical assembly, wiring, circuitry, and mechanical assembly processes.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with colleagues and external partners.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and electrical schematics.

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineering Designation.
  • Proficiency in process simulation software, AutoCAD, Unigraphics, or Solid Edge.
  • Experience in low-volume, highly engineered product environments.
  • Six Sigma training (green belt or black belt certification).
  • Knowledge of MRP systems, particularly SAP.
  • Understanding of regulations and specifications from the Association of American Railroads and the Federal Railroad Administration.
  • Familiarity with locomotive products.
