Schenectady, New York, United States Naval Nuclear Laboratory Full time
Position Overview

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge naval nuclear propulsion technologies. Our mission encompasses providing essential technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. Navy's nuclear reactors, while also training the personnel who operate these critical systems.

With a workforce of nearly 8,000 dedicated employees across various locations, including Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho, we have been a vital part of the nation's defense since 1946. Our facilities, including the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, play a crucial role in supporting the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Job Responsibilities

This role offers an exciting opportunity for candidates to gain significant hands-on experience and responsibility over an approximate 1-2 year assignment at either the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory. Following this initial period, candidates will transition into the Field Engineering Program for a 3-5 year assignment in a shipyard environment.

The laboratory assignment is designed to immerse candidates in the fleet support engineering community, focusing on:

  • Providing reactor plant engineering support for aircraft carrier and submarine platforms.
  • Engaging in problem resolution and improvement initiatives throughout the lifecycle of naval vessels.
  • Participating in new construction, reactor servicing, maintenance, and emergent problem resolution.

Candidates will be expected to relocate to the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory for approximately two years before moving to a shipyard for further training and practical experience.

Key Qualifications

Successful candidates will serve as on-site representatives of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, providing independent oversight and engineering support for reactor plant systems, components, and safety systems. Responsibilities include:

  • Applying sound engineering principles to influence on-site management and partner organizations.
  • Completing job-specific qualifications, with training expected to take about one year.
  • Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of requirements and the ability to function effectively in a technical support capacity.

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related science field from an accredited institution is required. Candidates must be willing to relocate as needed throughout their assignments.

Preferred Skills
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to diverse tasks and responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team objectives.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, Dental, & Vision Coverage
  • 401(k) Savings Program
  • Personal & Medical Time Off
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Disability, Life, and Accident Insurance
  • Flexible Work Schedule Options
  • Tuition Assistance for Eligible Employees

The annual pay range for this position is $64,500 - $96,700, based on experience and qualifications.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a Federal background investigation to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
