The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a key entity within the U.S. Department of Energy, focusing on the advancement of naval nuclear propulsion technologies. Our mission includes providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of naval nuclear reactors, as well as training the personnel who operate these systems in the Navy's submarines and aircraft carriers.
With nearly 8,000 dedicated employees across primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has a longstanding commitment to supporting the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a subsidiary of Fluor Corporation, we have been a vital part of national defense since 1946.
Job ResponsibilitiesThis role offers a unique opportunity for candidates seeking autonomy and significant responsibility. The position entails an initial assignment of approximately 1-2 years at one of our laboratories, followed by a transition into the Field Engineering Program for a subsequent 3-5 year assignment in a shipyard environment.
The laboratory assignment is designed to immerse candidates in the fleet support engineering community, where they will:
- Provide reactor plant engineering support, including problem resolution and improvement initiatives for aircraft carrier and submarine platforms.
- Engage in various phases of the ship lifecycle, such as new construction, reactor servicing, and maintenance availabilities.
- Relocate to the laboratory for the initial two years before moving to a shipyard for further training and responsibilities.
As an RPCO engineer, you will serve as the on-site representative of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, offering independent oversight and engineering support for:
- Installation and modification of reactor plant systems and safety components.
- Testing and servicing of reactor systems.
- Providing feedback and guidance to on-site management and partner organizations during nuclear operations.
A successful candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related science field from an accredited institution.
- A willingness to relocate to a shipyard and return to the laboratory upon completion of the assignment.
We value candidates who demonstrate:
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- A keen eagerness to learn and adapt to diverse tasks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work independently while contributing to team objectives.
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:
- Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
- 401(k) Savings Program
- Personal and Medical Time Off
- Paid Parental Leave
- Tuition Assistance for Eligible Employees
The annual salary range for this position is $64,500 - $96,700, dependent on experience and qualifications.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability. All candidates must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a Federal background investigation.
