Role Summary:

The Healthcare Support Specialist, under the guidance of the Health Center Manager and the Refugee Health Program Manager, plays a vital role within the Community Clinic clinical team. This position is responsible for assisting and supporting the Refugee Health Assistance (RHA) program and the clinical team in delivering high-quality, direct patient care for both children and adults, under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional or nurse. Additionally, the Specialist will perform administrative tasks and aid in the planning and execution of work processes, ensuring compliance with all core activities outlined in agreements with relevant health authorities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct and document intake and screening procedures for the clinical team, including laboratory tests, vision and hearing assessments, growth monitoring, and vital signs.
  • Assist with data entry for the Maryland Immigrant and Refugee Information (MIRI) system, maintaining accurate records and communicating effectively with the program manager regarding any issues.
  • Manage phone communications and appointment scheduling, collaborating with the RHA Program Manager to prioritize patients with urgent health needs.
  • Utilize appropriate medical terminology and demonstrate sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, colleagues, and the public.
  • Prepare for patient visits by reviewing abnormal lab results and coordinating necessary vaccinations for patients aged 18 and under.
  • Monitor patients with positive Tuberculin Skin Tests or QuantiFERON tests, ensuring follow-up chest x-rays are conducted to rule out active tuberculosis.
  • Assist in managing the daily schedule flow, confirming patient appointments in advance.
  • Participate in daily team meetings in alignment with Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiatives.
  • Ensure that infectious diseases are reported to the appropriate health authorities.
  • Assist with pre-authorization for prescriptions and liaise with managed care organizations and pharmacies for approvals.
  • Support the management and documentation of all programs under grant funding.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ability to implement and manage grant-specific requirements within a primary care environment.
  • Experience in cleaning and maintaining medical equipment and supplies.
  • Proficient in vaccine preparation and administration.
  • Cultural competence in healthcare settings, including effective communication with patients of varying health literacy levels.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining quality control standards.
  • Proficient in computer skills and data entry; experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is preferred.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with completion of a medical assistant program.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to train new staff members effectively.
  • Capability to perform patient care tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel between health center locations as required.
