Position Summary:


The Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist is tasked with the precise gathering of patient samples for laboratory analysis within a professional healthcare setting.

This role is integral to a vibrant and collaborative team, handling a diverse workload that spans from bustling hospital environments to various clinic settings.

Individuals in this position will acquire essential skills and insights that will facilitate their professional growth and career progression.

Shifts Available - Full-time and Part-time Opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts specimen collection (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) in accordance with established protocols. Ensures patient identification through dual identifiers. Accurately labels samples and containers.
  • Prioritizes specimen collections based on urgency (STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc.). Manages the intake of samples into the laboratory, adhering to computer protocols for processing, preparation, centrifugation, aliquoting, and routing, including reference laboratories. Guarantees prompt transport and processing of all patient samples for analysis.
  • Maintains patient lab reports, requisitions charges for billing, and distributes reports to external facilities. Posts charges and reconciles billing statements. Investigates complex billing inquiries as necessary. Researches and resolves any ambiguous patient orders. Accurately enters patient demographic information. Keeps required laboratory records and logs, compiles statistics for reports, and performs other clerical tasks as directed by management.
  • Handles complex specimen setups. Inputs intricate orders and results. Packages and ships biohazardous materials. Communicates any special circumstances regarding specimens or testing to relevant staff and management.
  • Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment, centrifuges, and refrigeration units. Records daily temperature readings for all refrigerators in the specimen collection areas. Orders supplies and ensures adequate inventory for efficient operation of collection services. Aids in the training of new staff and students. Acts as a point of contact, welcoming patients and managing phone inquiries within the laboratory. Performs patient registration and test ordering as necessary.
  • Documents and conveys information thoroughly and accurately. Utilizes equipment in line with departmental guidelines, ensuring all tools are maintained according to standards. Evaluates and manages inventory appropriately, assisting with inventory control as needed.
  • Maintains a tidy and organized workspace. Disposes of waste correctly. Cleans work surfaces and equipment. Restocks supplies as necessary. Oversees the cleanliness of restrooms and performs related functions as needed.
  • Advocates for the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Healthcare, adhering to service behavior standards.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician) AMT or PBT (Phlebotomy Technician) ASCP certification is preferred.
  • Six (6) months of laboratory experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:


Physical requirements include interacting with patients, their families, and healthcare providers, necessitating effective verbal communication and comprehension of spoken information.

Ability to operate computers and intricate laboratory equipment with precision, requiring dexterity in fingers and hands.

Visual acuity to read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documentation.

Ability to walk while transporting specimen collection equipment.

Capacity to remain standing for extended periods to perform duties.

Ability to adjust body posture, including bending, to execute specimen collection tasks.
