Position Overview:
The Medical Support Specialist is responsible for delivering care to patients within an outpatient clinic environment. This role entails assisting patients with both urgent and ongoing health concerns in the Neurology Clinic.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
1. Executes general administrative and patient care responsibilities in alignment with the Intermountain Scope of Practice and other established protocols.
- Exhibits effective and diplomatic communication skills within a collaborative healthcare team.
- Welcomes and prepares patients for consultations while maintaining a supportive and positive demeanor.
- Attentively addresses patient needs, coordinates care, administers treatments, and accurately documents all interactions.
- Ensures patient safety and confidentiality by adhering to HIPAA regulations.
- Collects and records patient data including vital signs, medical history, allergies, current medications, and primary concerns.
- Demonstrates familiarity with examination, diagnostic, and treatment room protocols.
- May be tasked with drawing blood samples and preparing specimens for laboratory evaluation.
- As directed by the Provider, may conduct routine tests such as EKGs, hearing, and vision assessments.
- Schedules patients for necessary diagnostic evaluations and follow-ups to ensure completion of tests.
- Communicates test outcomes to patients and collaborates on care plans as instructed by the Provider.
- Records patient care plans, test results, and examination findings in the medical records as per Provider directives.
- Prepares, cleans, and sterilizes instruments while maintaining equipment; organizes patient exam rooms and disposes of contaminated materials according to established protocols.
- Administers prescribed medications and/or vaccines through various methods including oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and inhalant.
- Escalates non-standard issues, inquiries, and concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare providers.
- Completes safety checklists and quality control measures as required.
- Exhibits sound judgment and composure, capable of taking appropriate actions in emergency situations.
- Promotes the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, adhering to service behavior standards.
- Performs additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Current BLS Certification is required upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval. Three (3) months of prior experience in a healthcare setting is required. Successful completion of initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks is required. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy are essential.
- Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred. Successful completion of an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is preferred. One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience is preferred. To perform this role effectively, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed must represent the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or abilities required. - Regular attendance to perform work on-site during scheduled business hours is required.
- Able to comprehend and apply information, policies, procedures, and skills necessary for the position.
- Possesses knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Understanding of medical practices and care to assist in delivering safe, quality patient care.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures, as well as medical equipment and instruments used in patient care.
- Proficient in utilizing various computer software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Health Records, with the ability to learn applications relevant to the position.
Physical Requirements:
Ongoing need for the employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with healthcare providers, patients, and visitors require the employee to communicate verbally and accurately hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues, especially during emergencies. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers is necessary to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing information, and preparing medications. Expected to lift and utilize a full range of movement to transfer patients, which may include bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment of varying weights. The role may also involve walking and assisting with transporting patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment. Often required to navigate crowded and busy environments and may need to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
