Position Overview:
As a key member of Alerus, you will leverage your extensive audit expertise to provide strategic guidance and insights across various functional domains. Your leadership will be instrumental in steering projects and team initiatives, ensuring the effective execution of audit strategies that align with risk management practices. You will define the audit scope, develop audit programs, and establish testing procedures while exercising sound judgment to influence business leaders and peers. Your role will involve assisting business partners in harmonizing their operational strategies with robust risk management controls. Additionally, you will play a vital role in shaping, implementing, and communicating the objectives and strategies of the Audit function. You will also engage with regulatory bodies, external consultants, and internal risk management teams.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Audit Planning and Execution - 65%
  • Contribute to the formulation of the annual audit strategy and conduct internal audits in alignment with the established audit plan and the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF).
  • Oversee and execute internal audits across various Alerus functions, focusing primarily on banking or retirement plans, trusts, and investments.
  • Prepare or enhance planning and risk assessment tools for each identified audit area.
  • Revise or create audit programs as necessary, responding to new regulations and risk assessment outcomes.
  • Conduct timely internal audits using a risk-based methodology, ensuring thorough documentation supports the audit procedures performed.
  • Supervise, mentor, and review audit work papers.
  • Track the progress of audit recommendations issued by internal and external audit entities.
  • Assist with audits in other functional areas as required.
  • Support audits and examinations conducted by external organizations.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to enhance efficiency in audit processes.
2. Product and Service Knowledge Maintenance - 30%
  • Assist in optimizing processes while ensuring adequate controls are in place.
  • Research new regulations and adjust audit programs accordingly.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the audited areas through participation in meetings and training sessions.
  • Stay updated on company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate current company policies and procedures for relevance and effectiveness.
  • Engage in ongoing education and professional development.
  • Pursue specialized training in your focus area, including self-study, conferences, and seminars.
3. Communication of Audit Findings - 5%
  • Responsible for the verbal and written communication of audit results.
  • Inform department supervisors and managers of policy exceptions, compliance issues, and control deficiencies during audit engagements.
  • Submit audit documentation, findings, and reports to the Audit Manager for evaluation.
  • Present final audit reports to the management of the audited departments.
  • Support all audit activities for presentations to the Audit Committee, external auditors, and regulatory examiners.
Position Requirements:
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in internal auditing within a bank or financial institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional certification (CPA, CBA, CIA, or CFSA) or an advanced degree is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of banking operations, retirement plans, trusts, and investments.
  • Experience in evaluating and testing internal controls.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to conduct independent research and work with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated leadership and supervisory capabilities.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while using office equipment.
  • Capability to operate a personal computer/laptop for approximately 8 hours daily.
  • Frequent review of physical and electronic documents.
  • Occasional standing, walking, reaching, climbing, or balancing may be required.
  • Vision abilities necessary for close inspection of documents.
  • May involve light lifting of supplies and materials weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Work primarily conducted in an indoor environment.
