POSITION SUMMARY

The ideal candidate will collaborate within a diverse team to innovate and enhance robotic machinery and procedural concepts. By integrating software and hardware solutions, and partnering with internal engineering teams and specialized suppliers, the aim is to create systems that facilitate safe and efficient automated pipe handling and drilling floor operations.

Role Overview - Lead Automation Robotics Engineer

We are seeking a proactive robotics engineer or controls engineer with a proven history in robotics and machine automation. The primary focus will be to design, develop, and optimize new systems for automation in drilling activities, emphasizing enhanced safety, operational efficiency, and reliable execution of handling tasks.

This position presents a technically stimulating opportunity in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will have the chance to contribute to the ongoing success of NOV, a company renowned for its legacy of innovation and technological progress in the Oil and Gas sector.

Key Responsibilities

The main duties for this position include:
  • Assess current drilling floor equipment for redesign aimed at enabling hands-free and/or automated pipe handling and drilling.
  • Investigate robotic hardware and software technologies to develop new robotic systems or enhance existing capabilities for drill-floor automation.
  • Explore effective and optimized path planning techniques, including advanced collision detection and avoidance algorithms.
  • Research, evaluate, and, when necessary, design software and hardware systems for electromechanical equipment, advanced displays, sensing technologies, robotic platforms, and computer vision.
  • Contribute to the creation of specifications and standards for robotic solutions at NOV, facilitating vendor quotes and technical assessments.
  • Implement automated systems and processes in oil and gas pipe handling and drilling, providing training to support personnel post-deployment.
  • Ensure adherence to NOV standards while collaborating with vendors during specification, design review, and approval processes.
  • Develop and manage test plans for hardware and software systems, whether developed in-house or sourced externally.
  • Configure and validate new automated drilling and pipe handling equipment for deployment on NOV and client assets.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications / Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline with practical experience in robotics and/or industrial automation, complemented by 5+ years of demonstrated experience in machine and automation controls development.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in designing and implementing machine control systems using PLC or embedded controllers.
  • Proficient in PLC and high-level programming languages such as Java, C, C++, LabView, Siemens, as well as operating systems like Linux.
  • Ability to interpret P&ID, electrical, and hydraulic schematics and translate them into software environments.
  • Familiarity with robotics platforms and toolkits, both vendor-specific (e.g., ABB, Yaskawa, Kawasaki, Kuka) and vendor-independent (e.g., ROS, ROS Industrial).
  • Experience with AI-related hardware and software systems.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills:
  • Understanding of Oil and Gas drilling rig operations.
  • Experience with AC drive systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and servo control.
  • Familiarity with programming HMI systems.
  • Working knowledge of machine vision systems and platforms.
  • Comprehension of AI systems and platforms.
