Job Description

Refinery Process Specialist

Under the guidance of the Technical Services Supervisor, assist the Operations Superintendent in overseeing product specifications. Engage in small-scale capital project design and development aimed at enhancing the productivity and efficiency of the refinery. Collaborate with Project Engineering and external consultants to monitor operational efficiency and support expansion initiatives. Provide operational support in unit monitoring and optimization to align with the refinery's objectives. Aid the Process Safety Management team in ensuring process safety and compliance with regulatory standards.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering is required; a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in oil refinery process engineering or operations is required.
  • Familiarity with capital and operating cost estimation and economic analysis is advantageous.
  • Experience in flow sheet development, equipment selection and sizing, pressure relief system calculations, general hydraulic calculations, PHA, process simulations, and process selection studies is highly desirable.
  • Ability to create and maintain unit monitoring spreadsheets, including mass, heat, and material balances, as well as conversion calculations. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other related software.
  • Knowledge of HYSYS, PRO-II, PROMAX, VBA, and MATLAB is preferred.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems, machinery, and towers is essential.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a solid grasp of P&ID's and PFD's.
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide technical support for plant operations.
  • Be assigned to specific units within the refinery, responsible for daily monitoring and troubleshooting, process optimization, and the design and development of capital projects.
  • Collaborate in a team environment with operators and engineers to resolve issues and develop advanced applications for process units.
  • Define the scope of small projects and work closely with Drafting and other Engineers to ensure proper design and sizing of required equipment.
  • Support the bidding process for Process Catalysts and Chemicals by liaising with vendors.
  • Assist in planning unit shutdowns and startups, administering plant performance tests as necessary, and providing operational data or drawings to vendors or maintenance teams.
  • Track performance data using spreadsheets and share information with vendors.
  • Provide Project Engineering with information for expansion initiatives, collecting Lab or Operational Data as needed.
  • Collaborate with IT personnel on the TDCIAPC control system to enhance monitoring capabilities.
  • Research and keep abreast of emerging technologies to inform future strategies within the refinery.
  • Regularly communicate progress, concerns, and questions to the supervisor.
