Position Overview
The Lactation Support Consultant at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital operates at a proficient level in accordance with Benner's model of clinical practice. This role is dedicated to addressing the educational needs of women in relation to breastfeeding support, functioning under the general supervision of the Nurse Director. The consultant not only fulfills nursing duties as required but also delivers expert nursing care to a diverse patient demographic, recognized as a specialist in lactation support.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Education and Support

  • Utilizes extensive knowledge in lactation and women's health to provide education to patients in various environments, including grief support when necessary, addressing the educational needs of childbearing families.
  • Maintains open communication with the Nurse Director, Clinical Manager, and Charge Nurses regarding patient education and lactation-related issues.
  • Acts as a consultative resource for staff and physicians, offering problem-solving expertise and fostering healthy workplace relationships.
Service Delivery
  • Evaluates the educational and lactation support needs of patients, providing clinical resources to maternal patients both within the hospital and in the community.
  • Identifies staff educational needs and develops programs to enhance patient education, including lactation support.
  • Facilitates the planning and execution of prenatal and breastfeeding education classes as directed by leadership.
Quality and Safety Initiatives
  • Demonstrates advanced assessment, documentation, leadership, and analytical skills, contributing to the development of professional practice standards and guidelines.
  • Leads initiatives aimed at improving quality and safety metrics, promoting accountability among peers and reporting near misses.
  • Adheres to regulatory standards and participates in quality assurance meetings, analyzing relevant data.
Financial Stewardship
  • Exhibits effective time management and prioritization of tasks, contributing to the efficient use of resources and budget management.
  • Supports departmental financial objectives by optimizing efficiency and reducing patient length of stay.
Professional Development
  • Identifies opportunities for practice enhancement and performance improvement, integrating evidence-based practices into clinical settings.
  • Engages in hospital committees and maintains professional development through ongoing education and participation in relevant seminars.

Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution.
Experience:
  • A minimum of three years of clinical experience in lactation support or maternal education programs.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current RN license in Texas or Compact State Licensure.
  • BLS and NRP certifications required.
  • Preferred: Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC).
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies for safe job performance.
  • Proficient in English communication, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to effectively engage with patients, families, and colleagues in a customer-focused manner.
  • Exhibits leadership qualities, including collaboration and coaching skills.
