Position Description

The Department of Psychology at the University of California, San Diego, is establishing a pool of candidates for Instructor positions for the Academic Year (Unit 18-Non-Senate Faculty) to deliver courses in the Department of Psychology on a temporary basis as openings arise. Candidates will be selected from this pool for teaching assignments throughout the academic year. The number of available positions fluctuates each academic term based on the needs of the Psychology Department. Instruction will be conducted in-person on the UC San Diego campus. Applicants must specify the particular course(s) they wish to teach and the quarters they are available.

We are looking for instructors capable of teaching both large courses (200 or more students) and smaller classes (approximately 150 students or fewer). Responsibilities include effective student instruction, adhering to course objectives and published schedules, advising students on academic matters, and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in their field.

Additional responsibilities encompass (but are not limited to) overseeing Teaching Assistants, conducting office hours, grading assignments, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and managing a course website. Instructors of large courses are expected to collaborate with, meet with, and mentor graduate student Teaching Assistants.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Candidates must be ABD or possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) in Psychology or a closely related discipline at the time of application submission.
  • Candidates must have prior teaching, research, or practical experience relevant to the specific course(s) they are applying to teach (teaching experience can include work as a teaching assistant).
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) in Psychology or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with prior experience teaching at the college level, managing large classrooms, and possessing positive teaching evaluations are preferred.
