About the Job

The Director of the Office of Human Rights will be responsible for managing a civil law enforcement agency, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local anti-discrimination laws. The incumbent will direct the work of Human Rights Investigators, Disability Resources Coordinator, law interns, and administrative support staff.



The Director will also mediate, conciliate, negotiate, and facilitate settlement of complaints. Additionally, they will manage day-to-day operations of the office, including budget, expenditures, and revenue. Collaboration with other City departments, agencies, and non-profits is also a key aspect of this role.



Key Responsibilities


  • Manage a team of investigators and coordinators to enforce anti-discrimination laws.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote equal opportunities and protect human rights.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints of discrimination and harassment.
  • Manage the office budget and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
  • Collaborate with other City departments and agencies to advance the mission of the Office of Human Rights.


About the Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil rights, law enforcement, or a related field. A proven track record in managing investigations and resolving conflicts related to civil rights issues is essential. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are also required.



The salary for this role is estimated to be around $120,000 - $150,000 per year, depending on experience. The City of Alexandria offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as retirement options and paid time off.
