POSITION: LAUNCH ENGINEER (DRAGON FIELD OPERATIONS)

We are looking for skilled engineers to join our Spacecraft Integration - Dragon team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise and innovative thinking to lead a team focused on creating advanced solutions for human spaceflight operations and reusability. Your responsibilities will encompass both pre-launch and post-recovery operations for the Dragon spacecraft, which is designed to transport crew and cargo to low Earth orbit. You will have significant ownership of your projects throughout all phases of development, and you will play a crucial role in establishing operational protocols akin to those used in aviation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Formulate and implement procedures for the integration, testing, and operation of Crew/Cargo Dragon flight hardware.
  • Oversee the checkout and integration of Dragon ground support equipment.
  • Facilitate daily mission-specific launch site and vehicle processing activities, including thermal protection system closeout for flight, capsule transport, and integration tasks.
  • Conduct vehicle system level checkouts and hazardous operations as a test conductor.
  • Enhance inspection, repair, assembly, and testing procedures based on insights gained from both flight and ground operations.
  • Manage work orders and drive non-conformances into actionable improvements.
  • Maintain comprehensive planning documents that account for various capsule configurations and work scopes.
  • Design and create tools to support vehicle processing and testing capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams and skilled technicians across departments.
  • Engage with government or commercial clients on pre- and post-flight preparations for human spaceflight.
  • Balance multiple priorities while focusing on shared project objectives.
  • Proactively seek solutions to technical challenges in collaboration with the local team and the broader SpaceX workforce.
  • Communicate vehicle status updates to diverse audiences during readiness reviews and daily briefings.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, physics, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with multi-disciplinary system assemblies, including internships or projects related to aerospace vehicles, automotive, or marine assemblies.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with spacecraft or launch vehicle operations.
  • Familiarity with hypergolic propellants and high-pressure systems.
  • Ability to write test plans and procedures effectively.
  • Experience with CAD software and large-scale CAD models.
  • Hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Launch vehicle or spacecraft integration.
    • Operations in clean room environments.
    • Test operations involving gases and fluids.
    • Data acquisition and field measurements.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to thrive in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Physical capability to handle moderately heavy materials (15 to 35 lbs).
  • Willingness to work with hazardous materials and undergo necessary training.
  • Ability to maintain focus in high-stress situations.
  • Flexibility for occasional travel and outdoor work.
  • Standard work weeks typically consist of 50 hours, with variations based on operational needs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Launch Engineer/Level I: $95,000 - $115,000 per year
Launch Engineer/Level II: $110,000 - $130,000 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

In addition to base salary, you may be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock options, discretionary bonuses, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan, disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various discounts and perks are also part of your total rewards package. You will accrue three weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for ten or more paid holidays annually.
