Starship Stage 0 Launch Systems Engineer
SpaceX was established with the vision that a future where humanity explores the cosmos is inherently more thrilling than one where we remain confined to Earth. Currently, SpaceX is advancing the technologies necessary to make this vision a reality, with the ultimate objective of facilitating human life on Mars.
LAUNCH SYSTEMS ENGINEER, STARSHIP STAGE 0
The Starship Stage 0, which includes the launch platform and catch tower, aims to revolutionize ground support systems for launch vehicles. The goal is to enable the launching, catching, and relaunching of orbital boosters within hours or days, rather than weeks or months. The role of the Launch Systems Engineer encompasses the design for manufacturability concepts through the integration and testing of these essential launch pad components. You will play a pivotal role in the primary and secondary structures of the launch mount and tower, which includes designing tooling (such as assembly aids, welding fixtures, etc.) and processes (like welding and large structure integration) to expedite the construction of initial versions of the tower and launch mount. As the build progresses, you will oversee tasks such as integration operations sequencing and collaborate with technicians on the installation of flight-critical hardware on the tower and launch mount. Throughout the construction phase, you will be responsible for documenting processes and driving continuous improvements for future builds. Additionally, Launch Systems Engineers may be required to act as informal supervisors and advisors to production technicians, welders, and other skilled labor partners.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate closely with analysts and the design team to ensure solutions align with tower design requirements and manufacturing processes.
- Develop production procedures and manage the transition of parts and assemblies from development to production.
- Coordinate and execute development, qualification, and acceptance testing of systems and tooling to meet hardware deadlines.
- Implement design for manufacturability changes to enhance production efficiency.
- Create original CAD models and drawings for flight and tooling components.
- Serve as the primary on-site design engineering contact for the efficient assembly of parts and assemblies.
- Establish and maintain build schedules.
- Analyze and resolve manufacturing discrepancies while collaborating with the quality team to address design, fabrication, and assembly issues.
- Participate in design reviews with internal teams, suppliers, and customers.
- Work alongside engineering and production teams to generate innovative ideas, designs, and enhancements for current and future vehicles.
- Source, retain, and provide technical guidance to both new and experienced vendors.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Hands-on project experience with mechanical systems.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing design.
- 2+ years of professional experience in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
- 2+ years of experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
- Familiarity with fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, or related computer-based modeling.
- Experience in large steel structure construction (civil, naval, or mechanical).
- Experience in designing and/or operating pressurized systems (cryogenic, hydraulic, compressed gases).
- Experience leading the mechanical design of operation-critical parts, including basic structural calculations and design considerations.
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software.
- Process development, facility and line layouts, and error-proofing experience.
- Proficiency with Unigraphics NX and Teamcenter CAD and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
- In-depth knowledge of Siemens NC or similar CAD and PLM software.
- Prior experience in developing, maintaining, and enhancing welding processes.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Physical dexterity is essential as flight hardware is typically constructed in confined spaces.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Capability to perform job duties that involve standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and working in cramped positions.
- Willingness to work in extreme outdoor environments, including heat, cold, and rain.
- Exposure to fumes, odors, and noise is part of the work environment.
- Flexibility in schedule is required based on operational needs.
- Willingness to travel to other company sites (less than 25%).
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Pay range:
Launch Systems Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
Launch Systems Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
