Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal Systems Safety Engineer to become a vital member of our skilled and diverse Systems Engineering organization.

This position is situated in Palmdale, CA.
In this capacity, you will conduct analyses across all levels of the complete system.

This will necessitate your involvement in technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk assessment, as well as supportability and effectiveness evaluations for comprehensive systems.

Your analyses will encompass all phases of the total system product including:
concept, design, fabrication, testing, installation, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.

You will also be responsible for ensuring the logical and systematic transformation of customer or product requirements into comprehensive systems solutions that consider technical, scheduling, and budgetary constraints.

Moreover, you should anticipate performing functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to convert customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.


Key Responsibilities:
Independently create System Safety documentation such as the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), Software System Safety Program Plan (SwSSPP), and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR).
Conduct audits and evaluate the effectiveness of the system safety program.
Operate in a classified setting to assess software requirements, capabilities, code, and tests with a safety-oriented focus.
Generate MIL-STD-882E analyses including Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, Subsystem Hazard Analysis, and System Requirements Hazard Analysis, among others.
Develop software test cases to meet safety requirements.
Document hazard analyses and test outcomes in a Hazard Tracking System.
Facilitate cross-Integrated Product Team (IPT) coordination to support hazard adjudication.
Maintain awareness of system design and functions.

Basic Qualifications:


Must possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) discipline with 5 years of relevant military/professional Systems Engineering experience OR a master's degree in a STEM discipline with 3 years of relevant military/professional Systems Engineering experience OR a Ph.D. in a STEM discipline with applicable academic/military/professional Systems Engineering experience.
Must hold an active DoD Secret clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled in Continuous Evaluation).
Must have the capability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with MIL-STD-882E and safety standards.

Familiarity with aircraft subsystem design, testing data requirements, and methodologies employed in the aerospace sector, including control room monitoring.

Experience on the flight line.
Experience in System Safety Engineering practices in accordance with MIL-STD-882.
Experience in process/contract compliance (DCMA).
Experience conducting system safety hazard analyses (i.e., PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA).
Experience working around aircraft and systems, including manufacturing and testing.
Experience in implementing/developing Safety Analysis plans/reports (i.e., SSPP, SAR).
Experience utilizing a Hazard Tracking System (HTS).
Experience in developing Test Hazard Analysis for flight test activities (AFTCI).
Familiarity with Air Force processes for mishap prevention, notification, investigation, and reporting (DoDI, AFI 91-202, AFMAN).
Understanding of fuel system servicing and maintenance requirements (Air Force Technical Orders and 1-1-3).
General knowledge of aircraft hangar requirements (NFPA 409, UFC).
Awareness of environmental requirements for electrical and electronic equipment and wiring (NFPA 70).

Salary Range:
$107,300 - $160,900

The aforementioned salary range serves as a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman evaluates various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.

Employees may qualify for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to participate in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director roles may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
