Position Title:
Custodian - 10 Month Contract

Overview:
The Alabama Department of Education is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace.

Core Responsibilities:
- Execute the cleaning regimen for designated areas in accordance with established frequency standards.
- Ensure that all buildings and grounds, including pathways, driveways, and recreational spaces, are maintained in a tidy and orderly manner at all times.
- Perform daily sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming of classrooms, along with dusting of furniture; wet-mop floors as necessary.
- Clean hallways and restrooms after school hours and during the day as required.
- Maintain all flooring in a clean and appealing condition, ensuring preservation; buff hallways bi-monthly and strip and wax hallway floors at least twice a year, along with classroom floors at least once a year, with increased frequency as needed.
- Scrub, disinfect, and sanitize restroom floors daily; clean all sanitary fixtures, classroom sinks, and drinking fountains each day.
- Empty waste receptacles and collect trash daily, ensuring grounds are free from litter and debris.
- Promptly notify the principal of any major repairs needed.
- Move furniture or equipment within the premises as required for various events, as directed by the principal.
- Report any illegal activities such as property damage, littering, theft, and vandalism to the principal in a timely manner.
- Conduct regular inspections of the facility and grounds for potential safety hazards; report any concerns to the principal.
- Familiarize oneself with the custodial schedule for all assigned areas and suggest improvements to the principal.
- Understand the cleaning chemicals and processes utilized in maintaining the facility and grounds.
- Maintain a positive public relations demeanor with all staff, students, parents, and visitors.
- Carry out maintenance tasks as assigned by the principal, within the scope of knowledge and skills.
- Perform general landscaping duties as directed by the principal, including but not limited to edging, mowing, trimming, and pruning.
- Manage the inventory of cleaning products and supplies, including liquid soap, paper towels, and other necessary items.
- Request supplies through the appropriate channels in advance of anticipated needs.
- Adjust work hours based on situational requirements as determined by the principal.
- Keep accurate records, including timesheets; overtime must be pre-approved by the principal.
- Exhibit punctuality and reliability; maintain a professional appearance.
- Adhere to the policies set forth by the Alabama Department of Education and perform additional duties as assigned by the principal.

Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Must undergo a background review.
- Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
- Capacity to adapt to new and changing situations.
- Neat appearance and adherence to dress code.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining job-related equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and lawn maintenance tools.

Performance Evaluation:
- Job performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's evaluation policies.

Compensation:
- Salary is determined based on the Board-approved salary schedule, which considers rank, certification, and experience.
