HVAC Service Technician - Class III - V

Job Overview:

The HVAC Service Technician will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This role requires expertise in refrigeration, heating, and pipefitting principles. Technicians classified as Class III will engage with a broader range of direct expansion (DX) systems featuring advanced control circuits and multiple compressors. Experience with air-cooled DX chillers is advantageous. Class IV/V technicians will handle complex refrigeration systems, including large built-up and reciprocating systems, as well as centrifugal and rotary screw chillers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and service HVAC equipment and controls with capacities ranging from 1 to over 60 tons. (Class IV/V technicians must be proficient in servicing centrifugal and rotary screw chillers).
  • Replace or repair compressor and condenser units as necessary.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and related components using portable metalworking tools.
  • Connect tubing or pipes to refrigerating units through sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solder joints to create a complete refrigerant circuit.
  • Repair or replace motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and ventilation fans, ensuring proper connections to power sources.
  • Conduct leak repairs, perform leak tests, and recharge systems with refrigerant to maintain optimal operating pressure.
  • Replace defective electrical components such as breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and wiring using appropriate tools and testing equipment.
  • Service air conditioning units with varying cooling capacities.
  • Maintain company-provided tools and vehicles in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, report hazards, and contribute to a safe working environment.
  • Exhibit strong attendance and productivity levels.
  • Demonstrate effective time management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Show commitment to teamwork, flexibility, and adaptability in the workplace.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of two years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC systems is preferred. EPA Universal certification is mandatory. Familiarity with pneumatic controls is a plus. Candidates should possess strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster effective teamwork and customer relations. Physical requirements include the ability to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 pounds or more, distinguish colors for electrical tasks, utilize hand tools, and work in confined spaces. The role may involve exposure to heights and extreme temperatures. Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential.

Certificates and Licenses:

A valid Driver's License and EPA Universal certification are required.

Physical Demands:

Candidates must be capable of climbing ladders, lifting and carrying heavy objects, distinguishing colors for electrical work, using hand tools, and tolerating confined spaces. The position may involve working at heights and in varying temperature conditions.

Work Environment:

The characteristics of the work environment are representative of those encountered while performing essential job functions. Adherence to PPE guidelines is required.
