Environmental Education Intern for Coastal Programs

POSITION SUMMARY
City Parks Foundation is committed to enhancing urban parks through innovative environmental education initiatives. The Coastal Classroom program offers an engaging after-school experience centered on coastal ecosystems, water quality, and urban waterfront restoration. This program serves middle school students at various locations, utilizing inquiry-based learning to foster a deeper understanding of their local environments.
Throughout the internship, participants will immerse themselves in coastal ecology and maritime education, complemented by field trips to relevant coastal sites and organizations dedicated to similar missions.
This internship is designed for motivated high school students in their junior or senior year, providing a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the environmental education field while promoting the stewardship of urban waterways and coastal habitats. Interns will develop essential skills and expand their knowledge base through hands-on involvement.
Interns can expect to:
- Deepen their understanding of coastal ecosystems.
- Receive training in program delivery and peer mentoring.
- Lead activities and provide guidance to younger students.
- Acquire skills beneficial for future employment.
Interns will be assigned to one of several locations, where they will:
- Collaborate with the lead educator on-site.
- Facilitate lessons focused on marine ecology and related topics.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including lesson preparation and inventory management.
- Contribute to online content for the organization's website and social media platforms.
- Support data collection and maintain records.
- Help care for equipment and materials used in the program.
- Participate in the setup and breakdown of activities, including handling equipment.
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in high school.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Basic understanding of coastal ecology.
- Interest in working with younger students.
- Commitment to the internship schedule and training.
- Knowledge of marine ecosystems and data collection methods.
- Experience with basic navigation skills.
- Dedication to fostering interest in marine ecology among peers.
- Strong attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
