Ophthalmic Assistant

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team at UNC Health Care. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our ophthalmology clinics.
Key Responsibilities- Clinic Flow Management: Monitor clinic flow to ensure patients and physicians are in the proper areas. Room patients for the physician, open Electronic Records, review data prior to physician examination to ensure completeness and accuracy. Open imaging systems and ensure all test results are available to be viewed by the physician.
- Assistance: Scribe physician notes on patient examination at physician's direction using electronic medical record format. Review and update medication lists and allergies if appropriate. Provide patients with appropriate educational materials and answer questions. Administer topical medications as ordered by the physician. Instruct patients in the use of self-testing tools and record test results.
- Procedure Setup: Set up for lasers and minor surgical procedures, using sterile technique where applicable.
- Equipment Maintenance: Clean and stock exam rooms and ancillary testing rooms when needed. Maintain calibration of ophthalmic instruments and report malfunctioning equipment to facilities managers for prompt repair.
- Patient Examination: Perform entry-level exam components such as visual acuity, visual fields, intraocular pressure with Tonopen, automated keratometry, auto-lensometry, and auto-refraction under the direct supervision of the ophthalmologist.
- Triage: May function in a triage capacity, respond to patient phone calls, schedule emergent appointments, enter medication refill requests, and assist with completion of patient forms, including but not limited to DMV forms and FMLA documentation.
