Position Overview
UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse in Surgical Sciences.

This position involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement research studies aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting, screening, and enrolling research participants.
  • Collecting data, providing nursing care, and advocating for patients.
Qualifications

Applicants must be graduates of an NLN (National League for Nursing) accredited nursing program and possess a Registered Nurse license from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.

A minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience is required, with clinical research nursing experience being highly desirable but not mandatory.

Relevant clinical research experience may be considered in lieu of clinical nursing experience on a case-by-case basis.

Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited provider is required.

Job Duties

Nursing Responsibilities: Conduct nursing assessments and data collection for clinical research studies. Provide guidance to nursing staff and other support personnel as needed.

Act as a liaison between the research team and institutional stakeholders, addressing patient care issues and providing counsel regarding medical conditions and research activities.

Assist in developing protocols for inpatient and outpatient research activities, ensuring adherence to scheduling and administration of medications and procedures under the guidance of the principal investigator.


Patient and Study Management:

Recruit and screen patients for research studies, ensuring eligibility and explaining study objectives and procedures.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Direct patient interaction and care.
  • Maintaining and modifying patient and research participant records.

Obtain informed consent and monitor patients' responses to therapies or interventions as per the scope of practice.

Assist in managing investigational medications and devices, acting as a liaison with the pharmacy as required by study protocols.


Data and Regulatory Management:

Train other research nurses in essential skills for data collection and nursing care, providing in-service education as appropriate.

Assist in the collection of clinical research data for various studies, maintaining accurate records and documentation.

Report adverse events and update physicians and sponsors on study participants' conditions, including potential side effects of therapies.

Coordinate regulatory aspects of studies, including budgets, contracts, and submissions to institutional review boards.

Participate in audits and represent the research team at scientific conferences as necessary.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Requires sound judgment in applying nursing assessment techniques and policies to research and clinical challenges.

Frequent interaction with physicians, residents, and other healthcare personnel is essential for facilitating patient care and data collection.

Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and demonstrate initiative in improving productivity and quality of work.

This role is primarily conducted in a clinical environment.
