Position Overview

UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse in the Surgical Sciences department.

This position works collaboratively with diverse teams to design and implement research studies focused on enhancing patient outcomes and healthcare practices. Responsibilities include recruiting, screening, and enrolling participants in research studies, collecting data, providing nursing care, and advocating for patients.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Graduation from an NLN (National League for Nursing) accredited nursing program and licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas is mandatory.
  • A minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience is required.
  • Experience in clinical research nursing is preferred but not essential.
  • Relevant clinical research experience may be considered in lieu of clinical nursing experience on a case-by-case basis.
  • Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited course is required.
Key Responsibilities
Nursing Duties:
  • Administers nursing care, conducts assessments, and gathers data for clinical research initiatives.
  • May oversee research activities conducted by nursing staff and other support personnel.
  • Facilitates communication between the research team and institutional stakeholders regarding patient care issues.
  • Provides guidance to patients about their medical conditions and research activities, following study protocols or under the principal investigator's supervision.
  • Assists in formulating procedures for inpatient and outpatient research, schedules tests and procedures, and may administer medications under physician guidance.
Patient and Study Management:
  • Recruits and screens patients for research studies, ensuring eligibility and explaining study details.
  • Core functions may include:
    • a) Direct patient interaction;
    • b) Interaction with human-subjects research participants;
    • c) Management of patient records;
    • d) Management of human-subjects research records.
  • Obtains informed consent and adheres to proper consent procedures for patients and their families.
  • Monitors and assesses patients involved in research studies, including their responses to interventions.
  • May assist in managing investigational medications and act as a liaison with pharmacy as required by protocols.
Data and Regulatory Management:
  • May train other research nurses in essential skills for data collection and nursing care; may provide educational sessions for staff.
  • Assists in collecting clinical research data for various studies, maintaining patient records, and preparing documents for data collection.
  • May handle biological specimens according to protocol requirements.
  • Documents participant conditions and communicates findings to physicians and sponsors.
  • Reports adverse events in compliance with protocol and regulatory standards.
  • May assist in preparing data for publication as appropriate.
  • Coordinates regulatory aspects of studies, including budgets, contracts, and IRB submissions.
  • May participate in audits and represent the research team at meetings or conferences.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
