Overview:

The Field Camp Operations Supervisor acts as the principal staff member at a specialized field camp. This role encompasses the comprehensive management, upkeep, and administration of daily camp functions, adhering to established protocols as dictated by the Field Manager and Project Manager. The supervisor is responsible for aligning with program timelines and collaborating closely with the Continental Field Supervisor to implement the scientific agenda. Key duties may involve coordinating aerial support, overseeing camp personnel, meal preparation, communication, weather monitoring, skiway development, equipment handling, hazardous cargo certification, cargo logistics, and camp infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute all operations in compliance with the specific standard operating procedures for the camp location, following directives from the Project Manager and Field Area Manager.
  • Oversee the entire field science initiative in partnership with the Continental Field Supervisor and Field Science Manager.
  • Manage camp staff and conduct end-of-season evaluations in collaboration with the Continental Field Supervisor.
  • Act as the safety coordinator, ensuring adherence to all safety regulations and protocols, and report any safety incidents as per ASC guidelines.
  • Maintain camp facilities and equipment in a safe and orderly manner, ensuring cleanliness and proper waste management throughout the season. Responsible for the identification, labeling, and handling of hazardous materials prior to their return shipment.
  • Assign daily priorities for equipment, materials, and scientific support in line with the seasonal plan.
  • Assist in the selection of camp staff during off-season planning as appropriate, and engage in off-season strategy discussions when relevant.
  • Prepare cargo for field deployment, coordinating load plans and prioritization with the Continental Field Supervisor and air transport coordinators.
  • Communicate effectively with staff to provide essential information for job success, including staff meetings, performance reviews, job expectations, structured training, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Keep meticulous records of camp operations, including fuel usage, camp population, flight schedules, weather data, and emergency response incidents.
  • Compile an end-of-season report in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Implement safety, environmental, and health programs as mandated by USAP.
  • Support search and rescue operations as directed by Field Area Leadership and the Emergency Operations Center.
  • Engage professionally with National Science Foundation and other agency representatives, both in person and via telephone.
  • Ensure the implementation and maintenance of a safe workplace program, prioritizing safety in all workplace activities.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, or four additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of four years of combined experience in areas such as weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo logistics, fuel management, skiway and camp construction, expedition planning in polar or high-altitude environments, National Park service roles, outdoor education, and logistics.
  • At least two of the four years must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification is required.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications are mandatory (training is provided at no cost through FEMA).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven ability to work and lead in remote and isolated settings.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, proficiency in computer use, and effective problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two seasons of experience in Arctic or Antarctic environments with direct involvement in polar field camp operations is preferred.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and capability to deploy to Antarctica for extended durations.
  • Successful completion of medical and dental evaluations required for deployment.
  • Completion of drug screening and background checks as mandated by the employer.
  • Must be able to lift and transport items, components, and equipment within safety regulations.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold conditions.
  • Participation in community activities, such as housekeeping and recycling efforts, is expected.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's License is required.
  • Must obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; U.S. citizenship is necessary for this process.
